Coilovers - helper spring noise drives me insane!

Featured Replies

Hello guys

Wow, the winter in Denmark is seriously rough this year! How about UK?

I'm driving with Vmaxx coilovers, and i'm quite satisfied with the result. I know it's not the most expensive suspension, but it's ok for me. But seriously, one of the helper springs makes a really annoying, rattling sound. I'm sure some of you have the same problem, but what can I do to get rid of this sound? Or do I just have to live with it? It rattles when i'm driving on bumpy roads or hit a sewer cover.

its pretty bad here at the moment too.

I dont think its the helper springs causing your rattling, it is more likely you need to retighten both nuts retaining the top of the shock and the one holding the strut top bearing.

could also be drop links or anti roll bar bushes or track rod ends

Lofty, "good" to hear i'm not the only one suffering ;)

I have retightened every single nut and bolt. So i'm quite sure it's the damn helper spring.

Bushes, track rod ends and drop links are in good shape :)

Its the metal washer thing holding the shocker inside the housing that come loose as lofty says its not a proper nut

Best way to sort it is to remove coilovers from car and take springs off, then put housing in a vice and remove top washer thing, i used a big set of waterpump pliers.

Once out clean threads up add plenty of lock tight and refit as tight as you can then rebuild and refit.

I've had mine on nearly 2 years and both sides were only hand tight, i give mine a good clean and regrease while they were off.

ah yes i forgot about this nut. Good shout meg

Helper springs are under constant weight unless airborn so a rattle shouldnt be present from them

may sound daft but might actually be the shock dust cover inside the helper spring. I have known them to go off center in the springs and start rubbing , knocking on the spring as the shock compresses. i had this on my weitecs, so annoying. i sprayed with WD40 and forced the dust cover to be more centralised. Could also be the dust cover has com out of it's resess and is moving up and down on the shock
