Winter tyres and wheels

Featured Replies

I appreciate that this has probaby been covered somewhere, but i'm getting clickers crank with the mouse.

I have 225 40 18 as standard fit and want to buy some spare steel rims and winter tyres. Any advise on what size to go for?

Cheers

Probably 205 55 16 as they're a common size and within 1% of the originals. I think they're the only size mytyres sells for the Superb (as whole wheels).

By far the cheapest size are 205/55/16”, this is what I run,

you can buy a premium winter tyre in that size for £73 oponeo they are normally just a bit cheaper than mytyres but do not sell steel wheel/tyre packages, but for the difference in price you can get a set of alloys from an Audi off eBay.

Or stick to your current 18’s but they are approx £50 per tyre more, which @ £200 per set will buy you a set of genuine Audi alloys and you have the hassle of changing them twice a year.

Going 3rd party alloys is more likely to raise insurance questions than steels, just something to bear in mind.

Splitting hairs a little but the mytyres steel rims are aftermarket rims as well, I told my insurance company they were genuine VAG alloys… they were happy with that.

I went with 205/55/R16, with Pirreli Sotozero rev2 winter tires. I've bought VW/Skoda/Seat rims for two resons - read somewhere that rims provided by 3rd part company rust quicker and secon, more important - I wanted to be 100% sure that I can use the same bolts as I have for my alloys. Car doesnt' look impresive at all but I'm not bothered :giggle:

Similarly - I went with top rated Continental tyres on steelies from my local Skoda dealer. Topped off with pretty awful fleabay wheel trims. But hey-ho we're ploughing through the bad stuff for a second winter.

Since my Dad works at Skoda I git a winter package cheap from the dealer. Its just like getting 4 full size spare wheels and putting winter tyres on. They are steel wheels at 205/55/16 and mine have Firestone Winterhawk Evo 2 on them. Although Skodas own 16" wheel trims are a rip off at £130 I still got them stop the car looking even more cheaper than it does with no alloys.

thanks for all your advice folks.

I have just bought a set of skoda steel 16" wheels and winter tyres that I found on offer at £599 from skodaparts. (assume summer special offer due to low demand)

but interestingly they allowed me to have a much better winter tyre than the ones advertised.

So I have 4 Goodyear Ultragrip Performance tyres, 4 skoda 16" wheels, the polystyrene spare wheel insert containing the skoda jack and brace and holding clamp all for £752.36 delivered.

I decided against a set of alloys as alloy wheels I understand are not very road salt friendly and I do not want to feel obliged to rinse my wheels in the depth of winter after each journey.

Also the 16" tyres are cheaper than the 18" to replace which should result in a cost saving over the life of the car.

Another advantage is that I will now always have a spare wheel and only have to store three spares.

The original L&K alloy wheel fits fine in the boot wheel well.

Not sure if this is a summer only offer but if anyone is debating this it may be wise to act before demand increases.

Anyone seen 16" wheel trims that resemble the L&K wheels?

First post!! Another advantage of 16" wheels is that you have enough clearance to fit standard snowchains, rather than the very expensive low clearance spikes. 16" wheels work far better in heavy snow than 18", preventing floating on snow.
