Gear lever gaitor - how to re-fit

The gear lever surround/gaitor has always been detatched since we purchased our Fabia II GL1. No matter how I try, it will not clip back into place in the centre console. There does not appear to be any damage to the clips. Can anyone recommend how this should be re-fitted.
