Solid flywheel conversions

Featured Replies

Hi, my Octavia has started doing the dual mass flywheel judder. It's from around 1500 revs when you accelerate it's juddering fairly badly. Has anyone gone to a solid mass flywheel conversion? What are they like afterwards? Or is it better to just put another dual one in it? Thanks all

There's dozens of posts on this topic. Suggest you try a search but, in short, opinion seems to be in favour of a SMF conversion if you have a 1.9 (which it seems you don't). Opinion divided about SMF on 2.0 litre motors.

Dave

Lots of conversions on 1.9's which owners are very happy with.

I haven't heard any first hand accounts of conversions on the 2.0 on this forum. I would put another DMF on it. Especially as you have a PD170.

thanks guys, its had a remap with its dpf removed, will that make any difference?

What bhp is it producing?

If it is running a lot more than 170 bhp, Maybe you should consider a performance clutch setup with a SMF or some sort of uprated DMF, as a standard DMF is likely to wear out again with the extra power.

I'm not entirely sure to be honest, I bought it this way, I'm guessing about 200 to 210ish brake looking at what companies on the Internet claim to get out of them. It's tourqey as hell tho, it's maybe not got the best of maps on it.

Not that deep unfortunately!

I recently changed to a solid flywheel only Yesterday, the problem is when I am setting off in first gear I get a vibration, all of the other gears seem fine, the Mechanic said the clutch needs to bed in, is this true? as I am not sure. the clutch kit is a valeo conversion kit.

thanks much help will be appreciated for peace of mind.

I had a solid flywheel conversion done and regretted it....pull away in first gear had noticeable vibration. Wish I had never bothered and had stuck with a DMF

I had a genuine sachs dmf kit fitted and still get a little vibration when pulling away. I'm not sure but I guess a small amount of vibration might be normal regardless of the kit fitted. I figured it may be the nature of the engine/gearbox rather than the flywheel.

Did you also have a new clutch fitted?

It may just be a characteristic as you say. I've never driven a manual so not sure. My 1.9 TDI is very smooth when setting off with DSG.

1.9 or 2.0?

To All interested in the conversionl, Read the third pinned thread, Re Conversions. Mr Holroyd has been very kind with his time to supply a lot of information regarding this

He's got a 1.9. I assume you're on mobile and so can't see the profile info.

Lol. So you did! And yes it just says Octavia so not giving much away.

Yes new clutch and release bearing / slave cylinder.

It could be the clutch juddering then.

Try a few racing style starts being a bit rough with the clutch. Might just need bedding in or some contaminant on the surface that needs burning off.

1.9 or 2.0?

1.9
