the same engine in the octavia is better fuel economy than the fabia, how can it be?

Featured Replies

the Fabia 1.4 16v pre face lift does less mpg tha the mark 2 octavia with the same engine.

The only difference i can see is that the engine in the octavia is euro 5 compliant vs euro 4 of the pre lf fabia mark 2. Having said that the face lifted fabia with the same engine is more fuel economical.

How can this be, they have the same top speed so the top gear is probably the same, 0-60 is about 12.3 secs in fabia and about 14.3 secs in heavier octavia hatch. Fabia's 1.4 16v has 85/86ps, octavia has 80bhp. octavia has larger rolling circumference wheels despite same top speed.

edit: just thinking about the larger wheels, if both have the same gear ratios, the octavia should have a higher top speed?

The gear ratios in the box or final drive are most likely different.

Are the engine codes exactly the same, if they are different they are not the same engine except for the CC's.

The top speed of any given car is not entirely dependent on the gear ratios and final drive. Aerodynamics have a lot to do with that.

ok, forget the top speed for a moment

the overall mpg is better, the urban mpg is better on the octavia, explain.

are they not basically the same engine.

Fabia, may be the Octavia you are refering to has the TSI 86ps engine, and the Fabia 1 has the normally aspirated 1.4 16v. Otherwise the Octy has a normally aspirated engine configured differently for torque rather than max power and that tends to give better mpgs. May depend on the year of the Octy you are referring to though, I'm no Octy eggspurt! But the TSI engine is far superior in power delivery and torque giving much better mpg's than the normal Fabia 1.4 16v engine. When it's put in the Octy it will give about the same mpg as the Fabia's normally aspirated 1.4. Gearbox ratios may be the same but final drive ratio may be different to allow for differing weights of the vehicles, wheel sizes etc.

I am referring to the 1.4 16v 86ps in the fabia and 1.4 16v 80bhp in the octavia (also used in the golf, golf plus, leon, etc.) not the 1.4tsi 122bhp.

Let me get the figures out of the brochure...

The figures out of the brochure are just that, often fiction.

Real cars with real drivers doing real trips is all that matters IMO.

Do the drivers of both the vehicles you are refering to get the same MPG as the brochure indicates?

I know I get no where near the brochure mpg figures, but do they test different cars differently.

I am not concerned with the accuracy of the mpg figures in the brochures. I am questionning why the mpg of the 1.4 16v in the octavia mark 2 fl is higher than what is essentially the same engine in the fabia mark 2 pre fl.

I was asking if you know it is in the real world & not going by the Published Official figures.

Have you driven both the way you drive for enough miles to compare if the Octavia does indeed get better fuel consumption?

unfortunately my local dealers don't have a 1.4 octavia fora test drive.

No not driven both to compare mpg hence asking here, although have been in a golf but it was the older 1.4, very sluggish but I don't mind in difficult times.

Can i ask where you are getting the information from ? If you have not got both cars and have driven them both on the same route and in the same driving style then as said above i am unsure how one can be compared to the other.

From the offical Skoda brochures.

I don't think any dealer would allow test drives long enough so you can compare actual mpg, brim to brim method.

You said the Octy was Euro 5 and the Fabia Euro4, which presumably means the Octy engine has been tweaked for emissions and output etc, presumably from how the Fabia runs.

That might be it.
