Banging exhaust under gearbox ... need some help

Featured Replies

Helloo :)

I got a custom exhaust mated to a blueflame cat and downpipe fitted about 7 or 8 months ago to the octy. Everything has been lovely until recently when it started to bang bang grate scrape (worrying) underneath the handbrake :( . I wouldn't mind but I've had a few self inflicted problems with the car lately and they are starting to stack up.

Especially when pullying away in second after coming up a motorway sliproad the banging became really really bad. I've had chance this weekend to put it up on axle stands and have a look, what did i find ...

There is a black bat type wing thingy underneath the handbrake area and the exhaust is resting right on it... no wonder the thing is clanking like a good un lol !

I've felt around the exhaust and there seems to be two rubbery type things in metal mounts either side. Now I don't know for sure because I haven't had it right up on ramps but I assume that these two things used to have a centre exhaust mount suspended on them which has either come off or was never fitted with the new exhaust ?

Does anyone have any ideas / pictures of what should be there but isn't... i'd really appreciate some help so I don't seem like a numpty with a flash but awful banging exhaust and no clue when I take it into the garage :o

Did you check ,if all rubbers are ok and there, where they belong ?

Perhaps it can be that the exhaust is a bit twisted in itself (This was the reason for such sounds im my old Audi 80 B4)

After unfixing the clamps and readjusting the exhaust it was solved. Perhaps some new rubber rungs can be useful. If they are worn out, the exhaust can move to much, and sometimes it is only a question of a few millimeters space.

Thanks for that Carsten... there is something missing as the exhaust is hanging down way too low. I don't know what is missing that is the problem. It must be a rubber hanger  In my case, the exhaust is hanging down by about 25-30mm+ ... it's not good :grumpy:

Perhaps a rubber is missing or a clamp has gone

As long as the exhaust is under the car and not in the windscreen of a following car- no big problem :D

Spot on mate ! That's exactly what it is. I just need to know details / part numbers / if it's an exhaust fitter (kwic fit in Britain) / Skoda specialist job :) Hope the nightshift goes smoothly :)

Pete :)

I should add that on seeing the problem it isn't worrying but hearing it sounds like the gearbox is about to fall out. Not good :rotz:

The mount area in question looks a bit like this (taken from a Golf) attached. Anyone got any ideas ?

Did you rattle on it a bit to see if it only has to be readjusted ?

I rattled it round quite a bit and realised that the mount was completely missing :) It's getting worse if anything :(
