106 derv runaround project

Featured Replies

OK - perhaps "project" is too strong a word, but when this came up for the grand sum of £150 locally I couldn't turn it down.....

What I initially got was

Pug 106 1.5 D - 58bhp :D but 60+ mpg.

118k miles which isn't too bad for a 15 year old car

Tax to end of May (so I got 5 months with the purchase)

Now for some of the bits I had to sort out

1) - The spare wheel was this. :D £10 down local breakers sorted me with a good used tyre

2) - Back bumper was pretty knackered on offside corner so I have sourced a decent replacement for £30 to fit at some point

3) - Bumpers and plastics were a bit faded so I slapped on some peanut butter I still had in the shed from the 924 spruce up

4) - Car generally was a bit untidy so it had a quick de-tar, clay and polish

5) - Funny lacquer wearing out on the drivers door, so I wet-sanded all the lacquer off and will be attempting to re-coat the affected area - not for a perfect result, but "better"

6) - A LOT of dog hair all over the inside. Took an hour with a pet-vax to get 90% out, but it will need another attempt later

7) - MOT was due to run out 6th Feb, only giving me a month to get it up to scratch, Thankfully, today it passed MOT without anything needed than 2 bulbs, and 1 bulb to be re-seated in a headlamp. £50 - sorted

8) - A piece of side trim was sourced from Ebay (mine missing), a drivers wingmirror (current one broken) from a local scrappy, and a steering wheel (mine worn from strange chemical reaction I think) from Ebay too.

All in all, the car now owes me £295.15 (keeping track ;)) and I'm ignoring any running costs as I shall be using this for most of February whilst the mongrel gets the turbo sent away for fettling.

Oh, and it needs an alternator :( so I think that will add on £100 too.

To be fair as awful as Peugeots are that's a real bargain cheap run around isn't it. Just don't crash it as it'll crumple!

Done a fair job tidying it up!

you didn't check the bulbs before an MoT? Schoolboy error IMO :D

Only the brake lights but as the back uses a second sidelight as a brighter brake light, I had no excuse when I checked. Should have backed the car up to a wall to check the brake lights really.

And the dipped beam bulb was on in the nearside headlamp, but it was only when the headlights were tested that no image was produced as it was found the bulbholder was not securely seated, Easy to sort, but I would never have realised when I checked it - It was on! That's as far as I took it. :D

Oh Mr Devon, that beast is crying out for some of the "good stuff".

You know you love the smell of a chip shop in the morning!

I want one of these, wish I never sod my Cora 1.5D :D

Was slow but would get 70mpg and never broke down, in 4 years!!!

Looks good :)

Yup! I used to run my Pug 306 1.9D on veg oil.

Generally used a 50/50 mix with diesel and no problems. Even ran it on this when we went to Germany and it was down to -16c on an evening with no problems.

Get yourself a bendy funnel and then down to the cash and carry and jobs a good 'un!

It really does smell good too! I was once cycling home and got a whiff of it... thought "that smells like our car"... I looked up the road and about 20 cars up there was my other half in our car! Really strong smell but better than the diesel smell that gets to the back of your throat!

No. Don't run veg oil unless you have a Bosch fuel pump. The Lucas ones are renowned for being a bit flakey when used with veg oil. I just sold my 106 with 128k on the clock and replaced it with the vrs. I'm hoping it was the right thing to do. At the minute the fuel economy is way down, but I've been doing a lot of small runs and letting the wife drive it with her lead boots on. I'm hoping when normality resumes next month to be getting more than 40mpg from the Fabia given the 106 did 55+ It was not a patch on the vrs though.

Do you find the 106 brakes really spongy? Also where in Devon are you? I have an exhaust from a 106 if it is any use to you any time.

Good point. Forgot to say that.

My Pug 306 had the bosch pump so it was fine but seen plenty of horror stories of snapped Lucas pumps after running on oil.

I've not checked the fuel pump yet. I'm aware of the Bosch/Lucas thing. I think I will stick to diesel with this one, especially at this time of year when it can be tough to start a car on veg only. :)

That's why I used to use diesel as well. I would put 40 litres of oil in then top up with about 20 litres of diesel (Pug 306... Massive tank for such a little car!) It still saved about £20 on each fill up compared to using all diesel and had no problems even down to -16c!

Phil

A blend is your friend. ;)

If I was going to run veg, I would just 100% it with a couple of litres of unleaded for that kick. ;)

Been there, done that. Ran a Pug 806 (bosch pump....) for a little while like that. I love the smell of chips in the morning! :D

I've followed a few french diesels, pugs and citroens on the quiet Devon a roads on the way to work that have been running on veg oil. The smell was really bad in my opinion, I don't like the smell off deep fried stuff at the best of times but 7.30 in the morning is even worse. If it were me I would ask hotels for the used veg oil though, they generally pay for disposal so an independent hotel may want to give it away for free. Just a thought.

True, but filtering is a pain in the butt, so for the 806 I just used to buy 20 litres of veg for about £18 from Makro and fill using a big funnel. Less hassle and still a lot cheaper than diesel.

I hear you. I'm not sure what's involved in filtering, obviously you filter it, but I never looked into the process as the 106 I had was a Lucas pump. In my opinion if you run veg oil it is to save money on fuel. I personally wouldn't bother for the 8 quid saving on 20 litres. Saving 30 odd quid is a bit more worth it though.

Moot point if you don't plan on running veg in the 106.

Watch the door latch mechanisms they are prone to fail in the cold. My pug went through 3 in 2 years.

If you use used oil you also have to heat it up in order to get the moisture out of it that gets in there from the food.

Phil

Phil I think you meant to say about heating "used oil" with regards to removing moisture.

"dancingbear84" You are right about the moot point, but fuel cost saving is all relative. For example I save roughly £10 a tank, three times a week. So there you have it, a £30 saving!

Well, I have roughly done 250 miles on £30 of diesel and beginning to approach the point where I was when I bought it (i.e the orange light coming on a bit) - Still got a little bit to go, plus I had the car running for a fair while static during the MOT test, so factoring that in, say 280 miles on £30 @ £1.42 a litre = 59.64mpg - not too shabby.

The best I got in my 106 was 58 usually around 55 as an average though.

Also, weirdly, the alternator appears to have kicked back in to life. Not sure how, and I can't prove it. Just the battery light on the dash didn't come for two quite long trips today.

Going to try and find a garage tomorrow that can hook a multimeter up to check

Devon I bet you the alternator would be the miracle that is Peugeot wiring...one day working...the next day not. You're obviously on a good day.

  • Author

Been two good days - garage confirmed the alternator was putting out strong voltage and the battery was also strong when tested..... How odd! :D

Got an MP3/CD Pioneer for £17 locally this evening too, so now have tunes. Just need to find out how the hell to secure it as not a traditional DIN slot like on a fabia.

  • Author

Wiring fixed by local garage today, and so I have no alternator worries now. First tank of fuel shows est. 61mpg, future tanks there to back this up after chucking in £35 and zero'ing the range.

it's looking quite tidy now Jason, I should imagine you could pass that on for a profit when you are finished with it, personally I can't see the point of running on veg oil because it's so damned expensive now! Not like the old days when me and my mate used to fill a trolley up at asda for 17p a litre and stand there pouring it in the car in the car park... Veg oil costs more than diesel now..
