Oil for my new yeti

Featured Replies

I have just taken delivery of a new Yeti SE Plus 1.4 Tsi - Fantastic!! I have some engine oil left over from my VW Golf Plus Diesel; it's Castrol Magnaterc Professional OE 5W-40. If the Yeti needs topping-up, would this be a suitable oil to use?

When I asked what oils I could use at my last service, one of the recommeded products was Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40 Fully Synthetic.. The label shows it to be SAE 0W-40; API SM/CF; ACEA A3/B3 A3/B4, C2 C3 And included the following ....VW 502.00/ 505 00...along with other BMW, Porsche and MB details which I won't include here.

The Skoda dealer was happy to use it and even returned the unused half a litre of oil in the container it came in.

My first service cost was £61.48 inc VAT with me providing the oil

All vehicles usually come with a litre in the boot.

So you should have spare oil if you need it anyway.

With the amount they use, that should do you ages anyway.

In a combined 35k miles none of our three Yeti's have used any oil at all !

For long service (ie variable service) you need a VW 504 00/507 00 approved oil. This is usually a 5W-30.

Not suitable as Yeti's should have VW504 or 507 spec, depending on servicing regime.

There's no reason why you can't use this oil for your particular Yeti, provided you're on fixed servicing, as it meets VW 502.00 homologation.

Wrong.

Sorry, but page 246 of my handbook tells me that for a 1.2 litre engine on a fixed regime the spec is VW 502 with a content of 3.6 litres. And the oil I quoted is VW 502

Yes, for the fixed service you can use the non-Longlife oil, 502 00.

This might be of interest: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-742-vw-engine-oil.aspx

Incidentally, when I switched from fixed to variable servicing, the oil was changed from a 5W40 to a 5W30. That produced the expected results: better fuel economy and poorer oil consumption, both of which I noticed - the effects were bigger than I would have predicted. (It will also have meant better cold start performance and slightly better horsepower, neither of which is marked enough for me to have noticed.)
