Electrical Problems

Featured Replies

Hello help again.

As some of you may be aware I wanted to wire some bits and pieces direct off the battery.

One is to a spare cigarette lighter which has an inline fuse and a switch so can be turned on and off, the other to a 2 way radio similar to a taxi one also with an inline fuse and an on off switch.

I wired the negatives direct to the battery terminal and the positives to the last positive on top of the battery (not the battery terminal itself) this basically killed and restarted the clock and sent the alarm into overdrive (the following morning) disconnected everything this morning and got system reset. I have now re-wired direct to the positive terminal on the battery and waiting to see if that will cause the same problem.

I dont understand what has happened (I know little knowledge is dangerous so I must be lethal) are those small terminals for specific things and do you think it will be ok know.

The terminals are joined to fuses.

You can use the supply side for wiring, but if its something that will drain the alarm will sense a voltage drop and go off.

See thats just it they were both turned off, so that is why I am confused.

The alarm unit has its own standby battery built in to stop a thief disabling it by disconnecting the car battery. It sounds like you've partly drained the battery which has triggered the alarm.

To power accessories taking heavy currents you should take the positive supply from the largest fuse, which supplies the starter motor. This will have the lowest voltage drop.

It's dangerous to connect directly to the battery because of the risk of fire if a wire comes off or shorts to other metal. If you really must do it that way you need a fuse in each line with a VERY short wire between the terminal and the fuse holder, well insulated and held tight to stop it shaking loose or chafing.
