Oh dear, rear doors do not open.. Children on the pavement wife not impressed

Featured Replies

Oh dear.. new car and well here we start with the problems..

2002( 03 model ) octavia 4 door..

Rear door one side drivers side started to play up and wouldn't lock at night so I had to just press the button and shut the door.. Then a few days went by and that door wouldn't open!

I thought ok will look at the weekend.. then the next afternoon the other passenger door will not unlock!!

so now we have two rear doors that do not open and I can't get them open.

Wife now back in my VW Polo and I have the Skoda. it;s funny when they want your car when there's doesnt work

I have seen a tip of some sort of tool in the back of the lock. I did a search on the forum and found some one said you can get the door panel off from inside the car.. I will just rip it off to be honest it's not a show room car by the time the kids jump about in there.. and I saw some one said it's an adjuster that has slipped or some thing.. Either way it's not some thing I am 100% sure on how to fix.

Any tips, has any one else had this.. I have a warantee with the car but its a dealer and hes bound to want to get out of it and he is also 1.5hrs away in London.. typical

Motor related... warranty SHOULD cover it.

Potentially it could just be microswitches in the locking mechanisms which can be a PITA to remove.

yeah I'm thinking the time it takes to drive all the way up to him I could have the lot out resolder it and put it all back again .. I have found a great link about soldering the joints that normaly just go..

I will give it a go.. one trick was to bang the area by the door handle that can shock the bad joint into making contact it's about 1hr to strip 5 mins to fix and 1 to put back I will post what I find unless some one else has any idea's

Alright pal

Had a similar problem with the driver's side rear door. You might have tried this (so sorry if this is a waste of time - just trying to save you some cash), but I opened the rear window, plipped the remote and then reached in through the open window and tried the internal lever that opens the door. I found that the release mechanism wasn't quite engaging fully and releasing the lock properly (pull the lever right the way back), so it was more mecahnical than electrical, if that makes sense. I then plipped the remote again and the door popped open. After I'd got the door open, I then removed the door card and carefully cut around the plastic (which you can then stick back neatly afterwards), which was quite straightforward. I then greased up the rods/cables and used some lube on the lock. I tried it several times to see how it was all working and then put it all back together. Turns out it was just a bit stuck. Since then, it's been fine for the last 6 months. Try it mate and good luck, hope it helps.

As above, I did the same on my nearside rear door about a year ago and it still locks and unlocks every time.

Two points. First, make sure you also lubricate the mechanical bits in the door edge from the outside too using a spray lubricant (not WD40) as these were dry and corroded. Try to get right inside with the spray. Secondly, I removed all the trim screws while the door was open in case the lock failed again - you don't really need them as the trim holds itself on quite well without.

Of course, this fix applies only to one type of lock failure and the probably only a small percentage at that but worth trying first

Talk to the dealer before doing anything else; he might be prepared to let you take the car to someplace local to you, particularly if what he's actually done is sold you an insurance with someone like, say, Warranty Direct rather than warranting the the car himself.

Dealer isn't interested other than having the car back there and coming back for it in a few days. Thats not going to happen as it's almost 2 hrs away and then it's train back and forth. So there you go there.. It only the second time I have ever bought from a dealer and it's certainly going to be the last. 70 cars and all have been private or auction.

Anyway..

THe door is now open.. I hit it in an attempt to move something and in the end I hit it out of frustration and it opened.

OK I have ripped the door cover off what a pain that was broke the handle ( main cover ) just couldn't get it off stuck fast!

also I think I have damaged the tweeter as well but I might not have. Does the tweeter only have ONE connection ( wire) ??? if not then yes I have clearly damamged that as well ( i was not very happy at the time of doing this, wife kicking off about cars in general so I told her to fix her bloody own, which didn't go down well ) it was also getting dark no tourch to be found another agrument !! some how it's always my fault!

So I have tried to get the lock off I can see the box of electrical tricks I need to get out to check the solder joints but I have undone the two main bolts that hold the lock/latch in place and the whole unit is loose but I can get it out!!!!

help I am stuck at this point I am talking about the unit that has the electrical part to it and it behind the door handle inside the door, it's also attached to the door latch/striker plate ..

I think Bowders or Group1rs on here have done this, not sure if Oet has or not, but they would be favourite for a polite personal message on here if it was me doing it.

yup have done it lots of times, funnily enough gotta do it again shortly as mine is deadlocked closed.

so you have done the bolts that hold the mechanism into the door itself?

have you undone the lock cover (its a blank) on the outside of the door by the door handle, to get access to release the little door release cable from the handle?

once those are done, and the wiring loom is disconnected, you will need to rotate it and fiddle it out, i wont lie, its a right pain, and feels like it won't come, you almost have to force it, prepare yourself for some skinned knuckles...

I'm still on this issue, it's a right pain in the *******

so much so I have bought another car instead!!

I am not joking :giggle:

A Mk2 Octavia Classic Diesel

OK OK it's not as black and white as that. But I bought this Mk1 for my wife as a reliable car and it is.. it's only done 58k and it's like new to drive. Really good history and every thing we want.. but out the blue a damaged Mk2 came my way and it's a light repair and it's a Mk2 diesel and that just have to be bought! so I did.. so now I have to fix this one and the other one and er......

well I might keep the Mk1 for me as it's so good.

so you still don't have the mechanism out?

  • Author

nope.. as it's the wifes car I have not had the time when she's at home and then when I do get time it's raining !!!! arrrr

going to try and get some time on it again at the weekend but now I also have the issue of finding a bumper , bonnet, headlight and repair the wing on the new car Mk2 one.. it's looking like a sensible repair I hope..

is the mk2 a vrs?

well, there is always a hammer to help...joke!

however, be firm and try fiddling it out, and different angles, kinda side on, it will come.

No a classic again.. but diesel and a mk2 on an 07 plate.

The Mk2 Classic is abit stingy on spec. No rear electric windows, No trip computer and no remote central locking.

abit cheap really but If I can add in a few things that would be good esp remote central locking

they are meant to be a better car though...

fit an aftermarket alarm, that way you can have central locking via remote, can also fit a universal elec window kit, though not sure i would be bothered,

  • Author

Agreed it's the remote locking that is what I really want for the wife hassel with the kids with a key..

rear windows not so bothered but I know what you mean I have seen a kit..

Prob leave that part alone I think.. But defo on the remote alarm fob.

I have driven a Mk2 and they are much more VW than before eg full of insulation.. the one I drove was a 1.6ltr petrol it was so quite I couldn't hear the engine. where as the Mk1 is still good but more noisy.

General comort in the Mk2 is higher but the Mk1 was not really bad just less of every thing. I still like the Mk1 and had it not been for the this Mk2 coming along and poss the door issue I would have not bothered with it.. but alot of car for about the same money I paid for the Mk1, now you see why I bought it
