buying an Octavia - waterpump

I'm due to pick up an 2008 octavia 2.0 tfsi from a (non skoda) dealer this week and am having "discussions" with the dealer regarding the waterpump.

Having done a little lurking in this forum i've seen the odd horror story about failed waterpumps taking out the engine by fouling the cambelt. Now the dealer is carrying out a service & cambelt before pickup but the salesman in retreating on his promise to make sure the waterpump is also changed. From the tone of the conversation I had the salesman seemed to infer that if it was in the service shcedule it would be changed, if not it would not.

so my questions are:

1. Is the waterpump specified to be changed at the same time as the cambelt (if so a link to service guide would be brilliant), or is it simply a no brainer to do with the belt off?

2. what would be the price of a waterpump (part only, and fitted)

also is there anything further to be looking out for on delivery regarding potential faults and/or niggles.

It's not specified to be changed at the same time as the cambelt. It's just good practice to change it at that time as you already have the necessary parts stripped off. The part on its own was £33.60 + vat when I had mine replaced on my old vrs not sure on fitting cost as I had it done with cambelt

+ on what allan1888 says. Water pumps commonly fail (why???!!!), and you might as well change them while you've got all the rest of the stuff around them in bits.

If they can charge for the change, why should they baulk at it? Or is the implication that it should be done for free? If the latter, then, no, it's not a scheduled item.

I had my water pump replaced at the same time as my cambelt & it was showing slight signs of coolant leakage,its worth you getting a water pump & a bit of coolant & asking them to fit it f.o.c as part of the deal if they say they will only replace the belt.Make sure thay fit a cambelt kit that includes a tensioner,idler wheels & bolts.

Just get £300 knocked off the price of the car and get it done yourself at a good independent, then you know its been done.

Most people just get it done as a precaution at teh same time as a cam belt. It's not an expensive part and it doesn't add much time. But if the pump goes even it's not catastrophic its a big job.

Get one with a brass impeller if you can. It's the plastic impeller that has caused a few problems. If they're not willing to bend of a little thing like that I'd tell them to sod off. No shortage of used TFSI cars about.

All the OEM water pumps have plastic impeller's. if its a dealer i doubt they would fit a non genuine water pump as they have to guarantee the parts
