  • Check rear wiper and washer work. That is a common fault.

  • Instead of paying a extra £1500 to get a FL model I'd be throwing that cash towards getting one with lower milage

  • You completely missed my original point. My point to Killa_uk was don't rely on the trip computer on a PD engined Octavia to give you an accurate readout of MPG....do a few brim to brim calculations

Guess that's for the garage to sort out.

Good call mattytemp! (post #2)

Yeh will be going back up to the garage tomorow and let them deal with it as not even had the car for 2hrs n this happens I can hear the relay making a clicking noise when I activate the rear wiper but nothing going on at the back

Dont worry about the high mileage, the 1.9Tdi is a great engine, good for anothe 400,000!

.. You need to do a few brim to brim fuel economy calculations to verify the accuracy of your trip computer.

It really doesnt help, motoring conditions, driving style etc all have major effects.

Check the history to see if any work has been done on the turbo, clutch/flywheel or EGR valve.

.. You need to do a few brim to brim fuel economy calculations to verify the accuracy of your trip computer.

It really doesnt help,

It does if you want to know what fuel economy you are actually getting!

How much does it cost to brim the tank out of curiosity?

£65-£70 depending on how low you actually let it get.

Thanks guys....

Need a armrest so desperately now :-(

How much does it cost to brim the tank out of curiosity?

Just to help you out with your mpg calc the octy has a 55l tank rougthly 12.1 gallons.

Do a search for "Jumbo box retrofit".

A few of the guys have retrofitted the centre jumbo box which incorporates a fully adjustable arm rest. It's fitted as standard on Elegance and L&K models. I'd say it would be a worthwhile retrofit as your going to be spending quite a bit of time sitting in it!......you'll also gain a useful storage space under the armrest.

There is also a retro fit arm rest on super skoda. Looks just like the jumbo box minus the rear aircon blowers.

Booke23.. " It does if you want to know what fuel economy you are actually getting!"

My point exactly. There are 3 main ways to measure that.

From the trip computer, (fairly accurate, easy, can measure over short trips)

from brim to brim using the mileometer, (fairly easy, can only measure over longer distances. mileometer is never 100% accurate because rolling radius of tyre changes with load, speed temperature and pressure)

and using the fuel gauge and mileometer (fuel gauge is very inaccurate).

Well, you want accurate results? WHY? If you could get 100% accuracy (and you cant) it would only tell you the consumption you had achieved over the particular set of trips you had made and conditions you made them in (eg temperature, rain/snow/fog/, were you in a hurry, tyre pressures, weight in car ...).

For it to be relevant you would have to be always driving the same route, at the same speed, in the same traffic conditions etc.

Its worth keeping a check on consumption, as a diagnostic, and the trip meter may not be 100% accurate, but it will be consistent. - Far more consistent than your use of the car.

My point to Killa_uk was don't rely on the trip computer on a PD engined Octavia to give you an accurate readout of MPG....do a few brim to brim calculations to verify trip computer accuracy. It might my accurate or it might not be. My trip computer was over reading by 9% until I corrected it with VCDS. My PD engined Fabia under reads by 7% and my friends PD engined Mk5 Golf over reads by 9% too.

I know the brim to brim method is more accurate than the trip computer because when I drive a known distance, my car's mileometer always reads very close to the known figure.....I'd say within 1%.

An inaccurate trip computer can, as you say, still be useful to help you save fuel and monitor how driving techniques affect fuel consumption. But a lot of us.....especially taxi drivers.....would prefer a more accurate MPG figure, as their livelihood depends on it.

very true, Booke; and I'd never be one to deny the value of calibration of your system.

Its the value of the result that I doubt. On one 3m run I once achieved 100mpg. Never been better than 70 mpg on that run since. (it is slightly downhill, all 40 zone.)

However, as you say, over a long period - say doing your annual tax returns "- taxi drivers.....would prefer a more accurate MPG figure, as their livelihood depends on it."

Regards.

Right am back again and it's not been a pleasant ownership since I've had the car only becouse first the rear wiper hasn't worked so I can live with that but this evening I'm on the mway and the coolant light comes on so pull over at the service and there's no water again wtf !

But the thing that came to mind is that when I went to view the car there wasn't any coolant and when I first started the car the light came on so it's losing water from day one I re-filled it yesterday thinking that they sdi don't top it up properly and now today there's no water again it's losing shed loads of water..

So now as I've sent the v5 off and also paid for it getting plated as a taxi there's no hope in returning it where do I stand with the garage in repairing this as they have given me a 30day warranty with the car and its been literally 2 and am not a happy chap.

After telling them yesterday about the rear wiper I have got the car booked in for Monday and hopefully I can also advise them about this and see what they say

This gets worse.

They've given you a warranty, so they can fix it. Even if it was not under warranty the sale of goods laws that would protect you in this situation.

You'll prob find its a chaffed pipe, rubbbing against something. Happened in my 60 plate & also my mates. 60 plate around the same time.

Minor repair I'd say.

The 1.9PD engines are amazing, you shouldn't get much probs.

I love the mk1 octy, only downfall is uncomfortable seats, no cup holders & legroom is abit tight.... I'm. 6ft7 having said that.

Well I have 30days as they said to me on the invoice so it's deffo going back on Monday for the wiper and now I'm going to add this to the list in just so gutted as am in no position to spend on repairs the reason I bought from a garage(he has over 400 cars)is becouse of this exact reason so I had peace of mind just getting really stressed now just want a car that drives.

I've just drive home now from where I was it was let's say a 20mile journey and I've got home and checked the water and the level is exactly where i had filled it up earlier so kinda confusing me AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!

  • Author

Just checked the coolant level this morning when I woke up and it's dropped even more and I haven't started the car still so does that make me think there's a leak in the pipe or fitting somewhere??

  • Author

Off today to drop the car back off at the garage for some repair work and break it to him that it's still losing water so lets see how this pans out ..

Not a surprise. Often water only leaks out when the system is under pressure (ie VERY hot) A 20m trip in feezing weather wont do it.

When you next go for a run, dont use the heater, get it stinking hot, then pull in and look for water coming out. If your losing water and its not leaking out its probably the head gasket.

Be warned, they wll probably just fill it full of RADWELD - make sure they do a proper repair!

Hope all goes well at the garage.

Just dropped it off at the garage and told them the issues and the new fault of the water leak so instead of letting them have the car for half a day as diagnosed for the rear wiper I now told them to just keep it and ring me when it's done I have 30days and its been literally 3 days so if they do radweld it I'm sure it won't hold till that long and I will be back as the issue with it losing coolant was from the very day I went to view the car for the first time as when I opened the bonnet on the viewing the water was low and up on starting the car the water light came on saying it needs some so lets see what they do.

Is there anyway of me telling they have used radweld?

Bit of a update:

Spoke to the garage and they have advised me that they cannot find a leak anywhere having the car 3 days aswell as the car not losing any water so I told them that I have had the car for 2 days and had nothing but headache all I want them to do is sort the coolant issue before I collect it.

He also told me that the head is fine and been checked so my question is where is this coolant actually going?

Car blows warm air fine

Drives fine

No unwanted noises

And no white smoke

Oil looks fine

I really don't think it's the head I actually think as said earlier its some sort of pipe somewhere!

What's my next step now guys to find my problem?
