Engine light on & Flashing Glow Plugs?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have had my engine warning light on for a few months now due to my EGR valve giving up the ghost however now my glow plug light flashes. 50% of the time if flashes, other rest of the time it stays off. I cant see any pattern as to when it comes on, and *touch wood* the car still runs fine.

A quick google reveals it could be down to brake lights, but mine all seem ok.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Cheers guys :)

What is the behaviour when it comes on, is it only when you switch the car on and if you switch it off and on again does that resolve it? Have you been able to scan for errors?

I have a 56 plate VRS TDI and for a while I had an issue where the flashing coil light would come on at startup randomly but if I switched the engine off and back on again it would disappear. As the car was under a warranty I'd taken out for it I tried to get my local Skoda garage to have a look but they were generally completely useless, not long after the battery gave up the ghost so I replaced that and the coil light seemed to stop appearing so I put it down the failing battery. A few months later it reappeared and then the engine management light came on as well, initially the latter cleared after five restarts (nothing seemed to be showing in VCDS) but I had the mechanic check it anyway. He couldn't see anything wrong but cleaned out the engine a bit and thought if the error came back it may be a faulty EGR. A week later the engine light came back (the flashing coil light had reappeared shortly after) and stayed there (the night before I was driving over 500 miles to Silverstone) and this time a fault was logged stating the exhaust pressure sensor for the DPF had failed.

I had this sensor replaced last August I think it was and I've not seen the flashing coil light since the car was also running noticeably better than even when it seemed ok before the engine light had come on so I get the impression the sensor had been on the way out for a while before it failed completely. Looking around it seems a common one to go and it's not expensive to get replaced, has it ever been replaced on yours?

I came across someone else here with the same symptoms and they said their issue was caused by a bad earth, I've seen a couple of others where it's been a wiring issue.

I always allow the glow plugs to warm up prior to starting, and know about it flashing if you haven't.

It tends to come on randomly, from a few minutes after starting the car to 20mins of it running on motorway journies. Aside from that it is hard to tell if there are any tell tale signs.

I will have a look out again though.

If there is anyone with VagComm in Staines/leicester/Crawley area I (& a crate of beer) would be grateful if you would take a quick look! :)

The glow plug light doubles up as the "something's gone wrong" light and can come on in response to a wide range of faults that have nothing to do with the glow plugs.

Ah, sounds quite different to mine then so my post is probably of no relevance. As trundlenut has mentioned in their post it's likely nothing to do with the glow plugs as when they flash it means something is wrong whereas when the engine light comes on I think that's usually an emissions issue. Which I find a bit bizarre but I think other companies do the same.

You need to get the car scanned.

As has been mentioned a flashing glowplug light can have several different meanings.

I'm just up the M1 from Leicester (jct 25) and I have VCDS.
