Coilovers - yes, that old topic

Featured Replies

Hi all, sorry to be the guy who goes there again, but need advice on suspension!

My suspension is knocking and every time I go over a bump the car wobbles for about 9 years... so to me that would be FUBAR'd!?

Was originally looking at Weitecs, went and searched for them the other day and DPM have them at £700 odd! Is that right? I swear they where cheaper? Either way, that is out of my budget.. so, what is the best affordable coilovers? I want a small drop and better handling. Not looking for track performance. Just a daily driver!

Also, is genuine shocks and lowering springs a better option?

I would imagine these are rubbish?

Don't look that much better for the money?

Ap and kw get good reviews as decent midrange coilies.

I have prosports on 1 vRS and weitecs on the other.

Both have been used on the road, and there is little difference in ride quality between them so far, although the weitecs are being used with 18" wheels and therefore are set a little higher, and thus feel slightly firmer.

The prosports are being used with 17" wheels, and are set lower which in turn makes them softer, but even so they are perfectly acceptable for a daily driver and "not that bad" on track either.

I expect if I were to raise the prosports a little and fit the 18's there wouldn't be alot in it on the road.

You seem in the same situation as me!

You are right about the price of weitecs!!! They were £460 odd and kw1 were about £520, but have shot up in price on dpm!

Ive been looking at the fks as in also under the impression and it is only that, that the ap wouldn't appear to give anything extra for the £80!

But then saying all this, i am going to send a message to an ebay shop today ad looks like weitecs are still available on there for £470! Again tho i only want a small drop and still wonder if its worth the extra cash as that could be spent on a rarb which may well work better all together than weitecs just on there own!

There is alot of suggestions and personal experiences to be told on here, but sometimes can contradict each other!

I've got weitecs with a small drop and the ride is just right

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

Just lloked on ebay again and they have gone up to £700 aswell :(

Should try awesome gti site weitec our under 500 pounds unless they have gone up as I checked couple of weeks back

weitec make 2 variants of the hi-con coilovers a,the gt at under £500 and b,the tx at £700 odd.the differance being the tx coilovers are i think comp/rebound adjustable, hence being more expensive!! other than that i cant think why they would have shot up in price tbh!!

This probably has something to do with the price increase.

As part of the restructuring and profile of the suspension brand Weitec' date=' the KW springs and KW sport suspensions will now be sold under the brand Weitec by KW. The KW coilover kits in the basic version with galvanized struts will be available from 2013 under the name Weitec Hicon GT, formerly KW V1 basic, and Weitec Hicon TX, formerly KW V2 basic.

Any questions please feel free to contact us.

As cossie has posted and damian has confirmed to me in a PM they have re structed weitecs/KWs and this is why the price has gone up!

Damian recommends AP coilovers over FKs!

I know that the merc vito drop links are required for the Prosports, but are they also required for the AP's? The FK's seem to come with new ones already

This post just makes me want to buy the prosports as I dont drive hard or on a track etc. (and also have no money lol)

Do the Prosports have a helper spring? Infact does anyone have a pic of the actual kit? All pics online seem to be generic ones

Yes they have helper springs.

Sorry, this is a pic of the exact kit:

No probs.

Btw, I am not saying for 1 minute that the Prosports are as good quality as the Weitecs, just that the ride is pretty similar.

At the end of the day, when I bought the Prosports last november, they were less than half the price of the weitecs, so for £200 I took a gamble on them and they are ok, not the best quality but for £200 you don't expect much, but to be fair, there not that bad either.

Now that weitec's are £700 it's a no brainer really, even if the Prosports fail after 24 months, you can replace them 3.5 times before (so thats 7 years) before they have cost you the same as the weitecs.

Thats based on the 2 year warranty I was given on mine via the linked ebay seller, I see that dpm offers 5 year warranty on his prosports, so thats 17.5 years then :D

Weitecs where never an option for me, it was down to KW Highsports or AP's... Now Prosports are getting more tempting again... Dunno what to do lol...

I can't help you with that.

As you know with the prosports you will need to buy shorter drop links as the standard ones won't fit (as I found out), so that does add to the price of them a little.

I have heard good things about AP (made in same factory as KW / Weitec iirc).

The trouble with suspension is that it is very subjective and what is great for 1 person isn't for another.

Where you live and the type of roads you drive on, will have a big bearing on what your needs are.

Where I live the roads are aweful, full of potholes and speed bumps, so the slightly softer coilovers are ideal for me, but on track I do wish the prosports were a bit stiffer lol.

In the same dilemma. Don't know what coilovers to buy.

Can anyone tell me if this and this are the same product? The Lowerks ones don't list the vRS/1.8T as an option.

The part number is listed the same, but if the picture is of the actual kit on the 2nd link, then it does fit.

Despite that the prosport kit maybe listed for the vrs, they should not be in my eyes. You should not have to change drop links on a car to get a set of coilovers to fit. Unless they come as part of the kit. If they are not a direct fit without modification then they have not been designed for that car.

If that's the case then it's a good bit cheaper.

So, by the looks of it the prosports arn't that bad? Will they be better than the current OEM suspension?

I plan to replace top mounts aswell. (guess thats what I can hear knocking at the top of the suspension tunnel) What do I go for, oem at £8 a pop or uprated?

I changed top mounts at the same time.

As for if they will be any better, for me they were, but as I said earlier, suspension is subjective and everyone has different wants and needs and so whats good for 1 person isn't good for another.
