Central locking not working on passenger rear. How to remove metal cover on door?

Featured Replies

Hi,

My dad drives a 2004 Octavia. It's a mark 2. Nice car but he has a problem which I am trying to help with. We managed to get the door trim off but the door has a metal cover and we think the lock is behind it. It does make some sounds so suspect it's faulty or something is not connected.

Rest of the car locks. Anyidea how to remove? Looks like rivits.

Many thanks

Martin

This job is an absolute swine. My central locking motor failed and Shark Performance did mine, but IIRC you need to drill out the rivets (carefully), buy the correct new ones, and then reinsert. TPS had to supply and the job was more complicated than was originally thought.

By the way, the locking motor is the complete door latch assembly and that you can see in the door jamb. It is about £100 ish and I think it needs to be coded to the car too.

I replaced one of the rear door lock mechanisms on my mum's Passat. Definitely not a straight-forward job, though fortunately the metal plate on hers was bolted on, rather than riveted. Was made harder by the fact the door wouldn't unlock, so had to get round that problem first! I think the metal plate is stuck on as well as riveted. You will probably need to detach the window from the winder mechanism as well (taping the window in the up position), as that is all connected to the back of the metal plate. That was a pig too, as you have to push out the plastic bit that goes through the bottom of the glass, which is accessed via the hole beneath the motor/controller. Suspect you'll also need the correct spline tool to undo the bolts holding on the lock - trying to undo them with something else if they're too tight will round the head off.

As you can probably guess, this job took me many hours of referring to a not-very-clear Haynes manual and internet searches! However, if I had to do it again it would only take an hour or so, as it was the working out what to do that took the time, not the doing!

Door lock mechanism is only one unit, but I think we got ours from eBay fairly cheap. Not many appear on there, and it needs to be the left or right side.

Hope this helps, or hasn't put you off too much! Good luck!

Oh, and no coding was needed for the Passat (last of the old shape in 2005).
