Very annoying whine between 50 and 60 MPH

Featured Replies

Just back from a nice long drive, around 160 miles just for the hell of it, averaging according to maxi 58.3 mpg.

I may have found my first problem, even though it passed its taxi MOT this morning.

Once I get it up to 50 MPH I can hear a constant high pitch whistle, just like when an air craft throttles when it come into land but its not loud, it just there all the time until just over 60 mph, the revs are around 1500 at 50, could be a bearing on the alternator or somewhere, dont thing its coming from the gearbox, but the sound is exactly like the older cars gearboxes used to sound like.

No its not the turbo, I reved it with the bonnet open a few times and no police siren sound

I posted this in another thread but thought it deserved it own

Hi Skippy

An absent-minded fare hasn't left a child in the back? They could be playing on the floor and you might not see them?

Seriously, if the noise is engine related, it should occur at 1500 rpm, regardless of what gear you're in or road speed you're at. Is it present at 1500 rpm in 4th?

This can point to whether it is engine or transmission related.

Hi,

If it is the transmission, I think this thread below sounds similar to your symptoms, and the gearbox is the same type(?) as yours, but not too sure!

http://forums.tdiclu...ad.php?t=279082

As you may know, the current recommendation for the gearbox oil is 1.7 ltres (1.9 for a rebuild) of VW G 052 512 A2.

This is, allegedly, a straight 75w non-synthetic gear oil. It is quite reasonably priced (about £6 per litre), and I think I read somewhere is the first recommendation of VW dealers to 'fix' a noisy 5 speed transmission.

I'm sure anyone working on your car will be aware that the gearbox 'level' plug is no longer used to determine if the fluid is at the right level - the oil has to be drained and refilled with a measured quantity instead. The last few hundred ccs of oil have to be put in through the reversing light switch hole, as the engine/gearbox was not designed to run at the angle it is now installed (done for a lower bonnet line??? - who knows?). And the tranny oil will sit above the level plug when it is at the 'correct' level. The reversing light switch needs a deep 22mm socket or 22mm box spanner to remove it, IIRC.

Also, the oil is drained out of the regular drain plug, but also out of a removed bolt hole on the underside of the box that is used in the selector mechanism, so the selector mechanism needs 'locking' before that bolt is removed!

Hopefully, the dealer sorts it all out on your behalf.

I'm sure someone will set me right if I've remembered this incorrectly.

Regards, etc.

Could this be classed as a recall

Just arrived in Bristol after 230miles,

so plenty of opportunity to test mine.

A low (not high) whining/whirring(?) noise from engine from 50mph to (cough cough) 8@+ and it completely disappears!

Tried it the whole journey and its always between 50 and (cough cough).

Could bd completely normal - just me being picky :-)

hi Wayne

did you notice at what revs it starts and stops.

if its between 1500-2000 its the dreaded vibration you get at these revs mines the same,

some say its something to do with the air filter housing.have not been able to stop it on mine let me know if you solve the problem

To try and describe the sound better its like when you blow across the top of a bottle but constant between 50 and 60

The source of my noise from 50mph?

Did anyone find a solution for this problem? I have the same issue with my Skoda Octavia '08.
