Greetings from the Desert...

Hi all,

Just wanted to say hello from Dubai. This is my newly purchased 2006 2.8 Elegance. Spending more than half the year here, so was looking for something decent but affordable to drive instead of these horrible Lancer rentals. One of my friends bought this new in 06, and offered me this one as he bought a new Superb 3.6 4WD.

Had it now for 2 months, some small niggles slowly sorting out. Driving about 200 Km a day, this is a very nice and comfy vehicle. Average consumption around 12.5 l/100 Km, although fuel prices are no issue here :-) Very happy with the solar-powered sun-roof by the way. Tilt the roof and park, and the interior is not much hotter than outside, even after a full day in the sun.

What to say my friend, great car.

I wish you many many happy miles.

Cheers

Welcome to Briskoda.

Nice looking Superb you've got there. B)

Nice car.

One thing I spotted are the lights have gone a little cloudy.

Should be able to clean them up a bit.

Are there any special considerations running a car in such a dusty environment? Air filter changing more often?

Phil

Welcome to Briskoda and sounds like the Superb is performing well.

I can imagine that the Solar Sunroof is being well used out there and I am sure that the heat in general will prove a worthy test to the Superb's reliability............ :)

As Phil has said it looks like the Head Lamp Lens Outer hardcoating is fading with the immense sunlight but this can be bought back to life with a machine polish, either that or they are just dusty and dirty in the images..........:)

Thanks guys, regarding the headlights, the outer hard-coating was a yellow crusty mess when I got it :( Had to sand them down and polish them to get them clear. Polishing a little bit now and then when I have time. At least they are of use at night now

Changing oil and filter every 3000 Km, and cleaning out the air-filter every 2 weeks or after a sand-storm. Wash the car 3-4 times a week. Luckily all major malls here have a car-wash service, the sand coats everything in no time :wall:

The sand and dust in Dubai is relentless. You're doing right by swapping all filters out well in advance of the scheduled intervals. Nice car. I'd suggest lowering it but if you're travelling anywhere off the main roads, it's a bad idea.

Don't do what I did on the highways either. Managed to get a customised Corvette ZR for a few hours. Cranked it right up on a flat section of desert road near Fujairah. Digital readout reported 187 and at 17 years old I thought I was the "King of cool" ... until in the distance I saw the road wasn't quite right. Thought it was just heat-haze at first but it turned out a sand wash had covered the road up. The brake calipers were humming by the time I had slowed down back to double figures and hit the sand. Very lucky escape. It's the fastest I've ever taken a car to, but it nearly cost me big.

Have you ever been to the Dubai Outlet Mall by the way? Interested to know what it's like.

Lowering is out of the question mate, I'm grounding her too much already with all them speed-bumps and raised sewage covers. Been in the outlet mall once about 8 years ago, but it's like everywhere else in Dubai: Overpriced. Duty-free shopping here means sell last years products at this years price with a high profit. Except for cars and petrol, most consumer goods are more expensive here than in Europe and South East Asia, and especially when it comes to electronics, of last generation.

Welcome to the forum!

At least you shouldn't have to worry too much about water ingress! although i imagine the pollen filter would probably clog up pretty quick too?

I noticed that you have what looks like DRL's in the photo.

I would like to fit some but have not done so until now as I do not want them to look like a bolt-on as so many of them do. Do you know if the ones on your car were factory fitted or an after-market add-on?

They are after-market, Chinese ones  from Dragon Mart, the Chinese Mall here. Seem to be quite good quality surprisingly enough. 90 AED, roughly 16 GBP.
