Gearbox noise etc

The gearbox noise is atrocious. The constant sound of a bicycle chain rattling at all speeds shouldn't be happening in a new car, I don't care if VW do say it's 'normal'.

Now at motorway speeds, there is a whistle/high pitched noise which I initially thought was induction but now think is also gearbox related. Anyone else got this? Seems to happen between 65-75 mph.

Economy no where near as good as claimed. But still pretty good :)

The handling seems to have gone 'off'. Not as precise and seems to crash over bumps where previously it floated. Seems pretty leany and rolly, tyre pressures are fine.

Brake noise. Was quite a loud scrapping sound at one point when going around a roundabout. Occasional scraping sound when braking. I wonder if the brakes are sticking slightly which would explain the noise, economy and handling/ride being not as good as it was?

Sorry but just noticed this subject to another thread - "Clattering". Still.....very annoying.

You're not confusing this noise with the raspy sound of the engine on accelerating are you? they just sound like that. The whistling well they do that at certain speeds, no probs. And the crashing over bumps, have you seen the state of the roads, some of the holes you could loose a wheel in, dodge them. Brakes, well that's a new one, no one has reported a problem, one of the best bits about the car, excellent. If you think you have problems I'd visit the dealer, the warranty should cover most fears you have.

Thanks. Have not taken delivery yet but I was just curious about the noise as already being discussed elsewhere on this forum under the title "Clattering".

No noise from our gearbox, a really good gearbox too if you ask me! and I'm with Mick, the noise the 3 cylinder engine makes on acceleration is fantastic :) sounds like an old porsche!

Bear with me, this is G/B related. I've just bought a brand new set of genuine VW UP front and rear mudflaps and floor mats from eBay(£48).

I asked the seller why he was selling this unused kit and he replied that the 2nd day of UP ownership his gearbox expired so he rejected it for a Polo !........ Hope I've made the right choice with the Citigo, I've had a mk1 and mk2 Fabia and a Roomster, never had a bit of trouble with either.

As they are both exactly the same cars under the skin (engine/gearbox included), and built alongside each other in the same factory, what is a mechanical problem with one could also be evident in the other - so having a CityGo is no guarantee. Having said that, I do prefer the exterior styling of the CityGo over the Up, but Mrs Truthseeker wanted the VW so........what can a man do?

He can do as he's told if he knows what is good for him! I appreciate they are one and the same, that's why I worried for about a second then I thought ***it I want one its under guarantee, bring it on.

Hi, i was the guy who started the clattering thread. It still clatters, but i'm used to it, and the gear changes themselves are great! So, i've stopped worrying about it now. I think it's just a lack of soundproofing.

As for the MPG, it's obviously less at this time of year due to the increased use of electrics and the engine needing a bit more time to warm up.

Still got an indiacted 62 mpg on a 60 mile round trip a couple of weeks ago. Best indicated mpg i ever got was from Leicester to Skegness last summer - 74 mpg!

As for "crashing" over bumps, i think nearly every car does when it hits a pothole - the roads are in a terrible state at the moment - 3 major roads in out area are closed for emergency repairs at the moment.

My advice, get the Citigo, it's a lot of fun to drive, and (if you drive accordingly) will deliver great mpg when the conditions are right. Sure, it'll make a few strange noises, but i'm pretty sure it's down to a lack of soundproofing. It's not something i worry about any more. :sun:
