VCDS won't connect to car

Featured Replies

Folks I was trying to help another member out earlier today with a fault code scan but I couldn't get the VCDS to connect to the car at all. Ran a couple of tests within options to see if the interface was running and the only issue seemed to be that it wouldn't reach the car with either the ignition on or the engine running. Wondering if it was something wrong with the firmware or COM ports, I plugged into my car and got it to start and auto-scan straightaway.

I have had a look at google and a couple of things were suggested - one being the presence of a fuse in position 12 (there is) and that the aftermarket HU could be causing an issue. The green light on the VCDS lead is illuminated.

Any thoughts?

What car was it trying to connect to?

Might that be the issue?

Sounds like the car was blocking comms to me. What symptoms to instigate a VCDS scan in the first place?

What age is the car J0hn?? I had similar symptoms plugging in a MY2012 S4 @ combe last year

57 Octavia vRS PD170.

Issue with the ABS and TPMS lights illuminating and suspected fault with an ABS sensor, but don't know which one.

Let's start with some basics...

#1 What interface type is being used? Only Micro-CAN and HEX+CAN are compatible to the 1Z Octavia.

#2 What version of VCDS were you using? Current is Release 11.11.5 and Beta 12.10.2

#3 What was the EXACT message shown after VCDS > Options > Test?

Using HEX+CAN and 11.11.5.

Can't remember the message, I'll look it up but the messages all suggested everything was fine but not connected to car.

Unless you're connected to the car you are having problems with, the test results are meaningless. If the test result is all good, the next question would be - please run an Auto-Scan and post the entire result here or post a screenshot of the exact error message you are getting while attempting the scan.

I can't run an autoscan because I couldn't get it to connect. Error looks like this:

I checked on my own car in case it was a problem with the computer, cable or software and it was fine.

Another forum suggests another owner's identical problem is due to the presence of an aftermarket head unit, could this be the case?

In post #7 you claimed to be using Release 11.11.5 while in your screenshot you are using 11.11.2 - so what is it? As a legit customer you can easily contact us directly via email for support. [email protected]

I'm using 11.11.5 - the screenshot is nicked off the Internet but provides the same error information. I didn't contact Ross Tech directly as the help in general on Briskoda is very good and I'm still waiting for a reply to the two emails I sent to Ross Tech in 2012.

I bought my cable from Gendan in late 2011 or early 2012 so I imagine my supper had ended anyway.

This is the other message I was getting:

As said, in the diesel car, the OBD connector LED illuminated green, all tests showed full functionality except not connected to car. I moved onto my car and everything worked fine.

The only differences really between the two is the retrofitted aftermarket head unit in the diesel car.

So after Ross Tech rolled up, accused me if not using a legit cable and then bogged off again, can anybody else help?! :)

J0hn, I certainly did not accuse you of anything. I merely pointed out a discrepancy in your statements that confused me.

Either way, as mentioned before there was a reason why I suggested you'd contact us directly instead. I have double checked our inbox, archive and spam/junk folders but really could not find any emails which would correlate to you. So my only guess at this point is that I am missing a link between your forum nickname and your actual name/address/email in our records. If you have had trouble reaching us the regular ways, you can most certainly email me directly as well (address should be visible in the signature).

Let's get this sorted, I have a pretty good idea what the problem may be but to fix that I need you to actually contact us/me.

did you try "restore defaults"

Hello J0hn, we still would like to assist you with this. Please get back to me so we can get this solved for you.

Hi Guys

Have you tried pluging it into another car to see if its the vcds or your car????

Maybe you have a friend or work mate with a VAG model car

Chris

Yes j0hn has. He can not get his genuine software to connect to a friends car, but it works perfectly on his own car.
