Fabia 2001 Power Asist Issue / Battery

Featured Replies

Hi, all. The Power Assit Stearing (PAS) light came on my car 2 weeks ago. I have left the car parked for 2 weeks and just tried to turn the car back on.

When i did this i found that the battery was dead. I just jump started the car and now the PAS light is out and PAS stearing is back on. The AA did not check the battery was charging they only checked that the connections where connected correctly.

Ive just tried to move the car and the back breaks are ceased against the back wheels (getting the AA out for this).

Has anyone else had this issue with PAS and the battery?

Cheers

Sound s like the battery has had it. The battery should go for more that 2 weeks and still start the car. You can check the charging with a volt meter accross the battery once the engins has been started.

Are the back brakes discs or drums?

The Battery was new 9 mnths ago, when it was replaced at halfords they said we had a 1.2 battery in the 1.4 so put a new battery in that was for a 1.4 - would this cause an issue?

Back Breaks are Drums i beleive

Cheers

Rear brakes stuck on, if by driving forward does not release them, then chock the wheels front and back, release the hand brake, using a sturdy piece of wood 2" x 2" or similar on the centre of the rear wheel, give it a few good belts with a heavy lump hammer on both rear wheels to shock the release of the shoes - quite a common thing when left stood.

Sounds like your battery is not powerful enough.

I had the same brake sticking on with a Passat estate after coming back from a 2 week holiday. Ended up taking the wheels off and hitting the drum with a mallet, NOT A HAMMER, the drums are cast and are brittle. Got it done before the breakdown people got there. If the car is on the flat I tend to live the car in gear if I'm leaving it for a couple of weeks.

I am fully aware of cast iron being brittle.

A hammer is perfectly OK when hitting the sturdy piece of wood 2" x 2" or similar.

Sorry, not aimed at you at all, more for the original poster as I was advocating hitting the drums themselves directly.
