Is the ASG gearbox really that bad?

Featured Replies

I tested the Citigo on Monday, and was quite impressed. However, I can only compare it to my current Yaris MMT. Having read some of the comments on here, the consensus seems to be that the the DSG is a better option, but that's out of my price range. So my question is, is the ASG really that bad (I read one comment which described it as a 'death trap'??) I wouldn't say I am an expert when it comes to cars, so would I really notice the subtleties of the DSG if I've been driving the Yaris for over 6 years?

if the yaris MMT is a single clutch "automated manual" you will notice no difference with the ASG, we have the same system in our fiat vans, and they are drivable (mostly in manual) I dont like the auto, because it canges gear unexpectadly and you get nothing instead of acceleration, but if you change gear with the stick, its much like driving a manual car, but without having a clutch :) I drive the van in manual all the time, and its fine.

DSG is a world better though.

Rich77, if you are happy with the Toyota MMT, you would be happy with the Citigo ASG.

If you notice the MMT changing gear, you would notice the difference with DSG ie no pause at all.

For the money, I don't think you can do better than the Citigo. Also consider the cheap extended 5yr warranty. I have cruise control and would always have it again - it works with my DSG to change down automatically on hills so it's a perfect combo. I am sure it works the same with ASG.

The DSG is great - changes are super smooth, mostly instant and imperceptible - and with the 1.2 tsi in the Fabia, it is way faster too. They were not doing the 'no VAT' on DSG's but they may be now so that takes a few grand off a Fabia and may bring it close to budget. Also the solutions finance lowers monthly payments and allows you to hand it back at the end; it should get you 3 years free servicing too.

Good luck with it!

PS I understand the 'death trap' comment. When I had an MMT, if you were trickling upto a roundabout and then floored it, you would find no acceleration for a second while it changed down. It could be disconcerting if you expect instant power like a traditional auto. In that situation you need to pre-empt the need for power with a manual downchange with MMT or ASG.

Good reply. We have an Aygo MMT at the moment and waiting for an Up ASG. Also had several DSGs and your evaluation is spot on.

My Smart has the same type of Auto box and i love it.Loads moan about the auto box in the Smart, but i find it perfectly ok.

I have driven all types of autos, including traditional torque boxes,DSG,CVT,etc.

I would never have a manual box ever again in any car,in todays traffic conditions.I would sooner have an average auto than a good manual.
