Depends on how you drive/what your typical journeys are likely to be?

I had a hatch for 12 months- here' what I thought of it...

Short journeys it warmed up quickly and obviously has no potential DPF issues to consider

Engine is very quiet and smooth. Loads of low down torque- the gear indicator wants you in top gear by 40mph. Overall for the 12 months I got 44 mpg indicated by the maxidot so realistically probably a few mpg below that. This was driving at responsible speeds.

Acceleration was brisk in the first 3 gears, above that it tended to struggle in my hands because it's a 1.4 in a reasonably big car and lacks mid range touque IMO. On the motorway it was fine, no problems cruising at the national speed limit and would easily go faster if asked to. To me it's weakest area was on normal 60mph roads- I could make reasonable progress without any problems providing traffic was light and no overtaking was needed on fairly winding roads- if I got stuck in traffic 40-60mph in such situations then the engine needed working/revving faily hard through the gears to complete the overtake- This was highlighted when I took my son to Aberystwyth Uni in September on a Saturday when the traffic was fairly heavy. I'd get stuck behind more powerful cars that went slow through the bends but accelerated out of them and the 1.4 didn't have enough power to be able to out accelerate them while they were accelerating too. If you don't travel big distances on these types of roads or arn't bothered about wanting to overtake these sorts of drivers then it obviouly wouldn't be an issue.

I enjoyed owning it and my post is not meant as a negative one. My failing was that I didn't have a long enough test drive- I'd suggest you take it on a lengthy one or the same types of roads you normally drive on and if you have a number of people in the car take them too as it's performance is affected by how loaded it is. Personally if I had had a longer test drive I would have probably opted for the 1.8TSI or a deisel, but at the time the VAT offer was only available on the petrol engined cars and the 1.8 is obviously more expensive to buy and run.

hope that helps

My Dad had this engine with 7 speed DSG in an A3 S line sportback and it was pretty impressive....burnt oil for a long while though and didnt ever return staggering MPG (mid late 30s was the norm, early mid 40s on a long but gentle run).

I have just ordered a 1.4 122 estate without even a test drive, Upto a few years ago 2ltr cars wheren't putting out that amount of torque and power whilst having to pull round much heavier loads.

In fact looking at the engine specs for the mk1 and mk 2 most engines fall well bellow the specs for the 1.4. http://en.wikipedia....i/Škoda_Octavia

Sorry but that must be the most pointless statement I have ever read. IF you where behind a more powerful car in the vRS then the exact statement would apply.

Interesting you have chosen to deride a single comment in a post that was overall positive and was only meant to help the OP.

Perhaps the following extra information may help.

The cars in question were not THAT powerful, the one that I rememeber specifically was a A4 TDI (probably the 136ps) that I followed for miles. He travelled at 60 ish down the straights but on every bend slowed down, often to 30mph or less when the bend could have been negotiated a lot faster or even with little or no reduction in speed in complete safety and at no discomfort to his passengers. He would then accelerate at (just) a moderate pace out of every bend back up to 60 ish until we got to the next bend and I was unable to out accelerate him during this initial phase out of the bends. This (IMO) highlighted a lack of mid range torque in the 1.4 engine as I was then unable to make a safe overtake when the road was clear in good time before the next hazard. Maybe I was just expecting too much.

This may not be an issue to the OP and after a proper test drive (that I didn't have) he may decide it's just the car for him, but at least he will be able to make an informed choice with this in mind and dismiss this if he finds it irrelevent/not important.

Like I said it was a nice car and I enjoyed owning it. It was comfortable and easy to drive and driven with care on a run I often got over 50mpg if I kept below 70 on the motorway and I hope you enjoy yours too.

While I appreciate that the 1.4 puts out the same max PS and torque as 2 litres did a few years ago this isn't the whole story and other engines have moved on too

In the above instance the vRS would have been long gone..even if it is a deisel........ :)

Blah

Only because it was the one point that was derisible.

The extra info btw just proves my point, more powerful car out accelerates less powerful car, no doubt the reason you bought a vRS??

Thanks I hope I will as well, having owned mk1 and mk2 petrol vRS' as well as a couple of breathed on Fabias I must admit I have been a little apprehensive about the 1.4 but have read generally praise for it.

As a work horse for ferrying dogs around the uk and bikes through Europe it should tick all the boxes especially when day to day I only cover a few miles so a dpf was out of the question.
