Interior bulbs

Featured Replies

I fancy some spangly led type bulbs for the numberplate, and the interior bits including doors.

Anybody bought any and got any recco's links etc.

Cheers

I just got some ebay specials and so far they have lasted quiet well,

Be warned though if you intend to put them in the interior lights they are really bright after driving at night, i only run 2 bulbs in front light now as it was just to bright with all 3 in altho i also have rear interior lights aswell next to rear grab handles

Yes, interior ones are very bright in the cabin. The only downside is the bootlights. I think I prefer the spread of light that a normal festoon gave, given that my boot is often loaded. The LED's just don't seem to provide much light in there. Elsewhere though, they're great.

I went for Philips all round, since I've had far too much trouble with cheap crap ones in the past. Bally expensive way to do it though, I'll admit.

Cool, do they do the numperplate or are they festoon type bulbs ?? I know the puddle lights are festoon ones

rear numberplate lights are sidelight bulbs, i was thinking of butchering the back plastic and retro fitting some of the smd panel leds

No. plate are just 501 bulbs.

Puddle lights are 38mm Festoon.

Interior lights two 501 bulbs left and right, one 43mm Festoon centre.

Glovebox is a 25mm or something silly like that...

Bootlights are 43mm Festoon.

Talk about pita.

They're all pretty crappy ones. You want to pick the SMD type. Look like little flat yellow squares with a white/clear circle in the middle, rather than bulbous old fashioned LED's.

Tip: Make sure you get the same frequency for all the overhead interior lights, preferably from the same manufacturer. Otherwise the different colour light might just bug the $h!t out of you. I've got all three Philips at the same frequency, and there's still a slight variation.

Ah balls ordered lol

They'll do for now, a tenner for the lot, they'll probably all pop within a week then I can get some decent ones.

Il second that point. I had the old ones, bag of poo! The SMDs are such a better build!

Again, these are warning that you may need extra resistors, implying that they're likely to draw too much current and blow when alternator is at full output. I'd avoid these too, unless you're prepared to calculate the required voltage drop, and insert a resistor in the wiring based on these calculations. Too much of a pita. This is why I was prepared to spend the extra on Philips. I've had too many nasty ones fail, and most of them were SMD type to be fair.

Do you have a link to the philips ones you have?

I just used ebay sellers, since I bought different types at different times, and they are very expensive. :@

Damn, in fact they're more expensive now than when I bought them. Osram also do some now, that may be cheaper...

Also worth mentioning, the links above are all the improved version (which only have 1 ultra brite SMD rather than the old type which had 3 dimmer ones) and mine were all the old type, except for the 43mm I had the improved version, which MAY account for the slight difference in colour and brightness on my interior light.

Also, there is now an Xtreme vision version which may appeal more for sidelight/number plates. But I wouldn't attempt to put these in the interior light. You'll hate yourself if you do.

Once again - why do people want really bright numberplate lights? Most I have seen just seem to illuminate the bumper quite nicely. I prefer it when my numberplate is covered under a layer of road grim :giggle:

I didn't start using them because of the light. I started using them because I got well and truly f3ck3d off with changing one festoon or other every 3 months in my Volvo. Even in the Skoda I tend to use my lights a lot these days. That way, other idiots have less excuse. I guess it's the cautious motorcyclist side of me...

You must have been unlucky with your lights  . I have replaced one number plate night in 208k miles. Half the year I travel to/from work with my lights on.

Think it was more to do with an overexhuberant regulator in my case, but it still p!$$3d me off.

Fair enough... I do find now and then my car gets a craving for brake lights :-)

I like super bright interior lights because it helps when you try and find something in the car that you need. Everybody comments on how good it looks.
