no front rollbar is it an mot failure

Featured Replies

is it an mot failure if u dont have a front rollbar fitted as mine is due soon but since fitting the pro sport coilovers the garage had to cut the rollbar off as it was knackered anyway to get the standard drop links to fit the coilovers am having so many problems trying to source 250 mm merc3edes vito ones to fit with the roll bar so do i need to bother if its not an mot failure

  • That's some pretty dangerous advice by whoever did it. :wonder: Screw the MOT, your insurance is null and void.

  • IMO you should have removed the coilovers and refitted the standard setup and I'm positive your PI policy would agree. If something was to happen you would be liable since it was you who carried out t

  • Well I've learnt a few things from this discussion. Certainly a lot of good and frank discussion. All I'll say is this: If Lee sold his car tomorrow, and the new buyer didn't know, is it still accep

it depends really... if there are any fixtures that are obviously missing then it could be a failure, however if the roll bar mounting and drop links are also removed too it could be argued that it is just 'not fitted'.. that whole concept is a grey area tbh

Is it the droplinks that are missing or is it the complete roll bar that runs to either side of car they have cut off,

If the anti roll bars there but the droplinks that link it to the strut are missing it will fail for sure,

I have a standard vrs roll bar in shed if your after another roll bar

drop links are on just the roll bar is missing

What are the drop links going to then?

unsure to be honest all i no is midland vw did the work and said drop links were attached but roll bar was cut off as it was knackered and needed replacing asured me would be no difference in handling unless i was pushing extremely hard on a track day for instance

and the options to get coilies to fit were cut the drop links and reweld which they said wasnt the best option if i was going to replace rollbar anyway as it was shot what they did would be the better of the 2 options

remove all signs of the ARB, so remove all mounts and the rest of the bar.

MOT is, if it is fitted then all mounts must be in good working condtion.... remove bar and mounts.... nothing to fail on.

Heres my fave.... if you have a spare in the boot and the tyer is bald you will fail the MOT.... remove the wheel from the boot..... put it back in for MOT and it will pass

BULL.

if the ARB is not there youll notice. the car will corner like a boat. it will lean even when cornering slow. they blatantly dont know what they are talking about if they said that bud.

Doesn't matter how big or how highly recommended they are, anyone who tells you that you wont notice the arb being gone and sends you off as if its fine to run without it unless you're on a track is a mong.

Take some pics of the strut area and post them on here, it will be easy to see what's missing

Screw the MOT, your insurance is null and void.

Buy a big looped over driveshaft arb and connect arb to the wishbones...

No shortened links required

Seriously I can believe a VW main stealer would suggest it's ok to run without ARB. My company car is a VW and I cringe every time I have to endure a service there.

As above would a photo be able to be posted of how they left the ARB and Droplinks??

It sounds like they have left your car Very unsafe.

i have pics in my head of Half a drop link flailing around inside the wheel with the ARB just resting on the wishbones..... or even thy have cut the ARB end off where the drop link fits and left the ARB loose....

Lets see some pics with the wheel off and i guess we may be advising you take the car back and get them to fix their F*up FOC.

A lot of folks seem to be going for the Pro Sport Coilovers and good cheap find, but folks need to know they will not fit to std VRS drop links and FARB and should not expect a garage to know that as the garage are expecting customer to supply correct parts if they are supplying the parts.

you need these

Also the Garage may of noticed your FARB has movement (as the bushes / plastic sleeves can go) but bad move to cut it and then leave std VRS drop links hanging, surely they would not do that as that is dam dangerous and the drop link could catch and cause bad damage.

Better to leave bar in place and advise to you the issue to decide what to do than go about it as they did.

its a little off topic here i know, But why does the Vrs have the HD drop links yet a lot of the other mk4 Platform cars have the droplinks attach to the wishbone..... that loop over the Driveshaft.....

Like this

droplinkwithlengths.jpg

is one or the other better or do they act the same just this above setup gives better clearance due to the way its mounted????

Edited by vRSsunroof

The wishone - droplink setup is an early design feature

The setup as in the vrs was designed for the early TT's, and has been used on the various 'sport' model VAG's designed later

The 1st TT's had the droplink mounted to a cast wishbone - these cars had some dodgey characteristics, so they moved the droplink attachment

thats just bad bad bad advice, what a load of rubbish as stated, to tell you that you won't notice the difference is rubbish, you will! the arb is there for a reason and to tell you you don't need one, is dangerous advice imo!

Sorry guys you are wrong, thers nothing inherently dangerous about having no anti roll bar fitted, the car won't wallow from side side like mr soft, the anti roll bar is not a structural part of the suspension per se and in my learned opinion it would not make it dangerous to drive without it fitted, it won't affect the handling as much as you might think, in fact in rainy/wet conditions the car would actualy be less prone to understeer.... however it depends on how it has been removed, if there are bare bits of drop link floating around that would be dangerous

the anti roll bar is not a structural part of the suspension per se

Both Audi and VW design teams have been designing in the use of a front ARB since the design of the UR Quattros, in both torsion beam and IRS setups
