Featured Replies

whats the best oil for my 1.4mpi?

also along the budget lines?

help much appreciated! ]

VW 502 spec semi synth as per the manual. You could pay more for fully synth but it's not really worth a premium.

^ +1 we tend to now go with semi syn ;)

I use the Gulf Tec semi-synthetic stuff sold in Home Bargains for £9.99 a 4l can.

It's this stuff http://www.opieoils....engine-oil.aspx

Obviously I don't have an oil analysis lab or a degree in chemistry etc, so can't guarantee what's in there. But Opie Oils normally know their stuff and sell quality oils, so I suspect they're convinced enough by the product. Also my car hasn't complained, but likewise probably wouldn't complain if you stuck the cheapest possible 20w50 supermarket stuff in there and changed it often enough - not that I would advocate doing so, lol.

My manual gives three options

VW 500 00/502 00/ AND 502 01 ( if other options are not available) .For petrol engines .

just dont want to be paying over the odds for some oil that might be too good for my car so to speak.. just want a generalservice with an okay oil what wont cause any damage

I'd have a look round the motor factors. I use 505 01 and I found one that sells an oil specced as that at a good price. Although I only buy it for possible topups,as I'm getting too rickety for crawling under a car .

I just use Halfords own Semi-synthetic 10w40 oil. Got a 4L can on offer for £9.99 last time. Done 3 changes using it now and had no problems at all. It's an old engine using old technology so I don't see the point in getting expensive oil for it.
