VCDS: Can I set head unit to mute on reverse?

Featured Replies

As the heading says really, is there a setting in VCDS anywhere that allows my Columbus HU to mute on reverse?

Although I am running recent firmware (402x), there no option under tone to control the volume on reverse, which looking at the online manuals seems to be part of newer hardware. I have looked through a lot of the coding options on VCDS but not seen anything. Have I missed something obvious please?

Thanks in advance

Adam

Never used VCDS to do this but have used a relay that was triggered by the reverse switch to operate a relay that muted the radio using tel mute.

There is a setting on the Columbus to mute the HU by varying degrees once reverse is engaged and you are looking in the right place.

However I think this is only available if you have OE parking sensors & controller fitted.

I've only seen this feature in VCDS on the PDC controller. Nowhere else.

Looks like a hardware solution I'm afraid.

It's under pdc on my stream head unit too.

Yeah not on my hu unfortunately. Not many options on the pdc coding as far as I can see either, but thanks all for your input

I suspect this is a pre-FL, so it's the "different parking sensor controller" scenario.

I've actually got an fl controller though, as building in ops...

I went the Hardware way, a very helpful feature indeed. My previous HU Audience didn't have it nor does my current PDC (xxx 475E ) Controller have.

Yes seems to be only way. I have a Columbus already though and not upgrading it for that one feature. The mute button isnt so much of a hardship ha ha.

I wonder if there is a connection between this and the type of sensors in the bumper you have?

Just a thought.

I know through experience that a complete retro-fit kit (front & rear or rear only) both work with PDC & OPS.

The only three options I can see are wiring, coding or sensor hardware.

I personally don't think the Columbus is the problem with this.

Sensors have got nothing to do with HU Volume. When Reverse Gear is engaged, a CAN Message is relayed to the Comfort/Entertainment Bus notifying that this has happened. It is based on this Message that the Volume on a HU is controlled. It is the same Message that is responsible for the PDC to be activated which then turns on the Sensors.

But aren't we using the drive can for the connection to the newer pdc controller. Which actually makes we wonder how the hu knows to even display the ops....

Just checking my Columbus: the setting is found by pressing the 'Tone' hard button, then 'Volume settings' soft button and finding 'PDC: Reduce audio vol.'

Do you have this on your Columbus?

I'm running the same firmware as you on a 2010 version 'A' HU (although it shows as 'B' now).

Another thought: hold 'Setup' to get to the hidden Test / Setup menu, then select 'Can'

One of the items there is 'CAN reversing'.

Put the ignition on and engage reverse. This should change from 'off' to 'on'.

If it doesn't, then your HU isn't getting the correct signal to tell it that reverse is engaged.

That's the job of the CAN Gateway, which is basically a Junction to all the different sub CANBUS Systems like Drive, Convenience/Entertainment, etc. One of Its functionalities is to basically forward Messages from one sub-System to another, in this case, Drive to the Convenience/Entertainment.

Another example is the Auto-Lock doors feature, where the doors lock automatically when the car crosses speed of 15Kmph (or configured) by relaying speed messages from Drive to the Convenience System where this speed is detected and an appropriate action, in this case locking of doors is performed.

Ok thanks guys. Makes sense.

I think its as simple my Columbus just doesn't have the feature under the hard tone menu as it is a very early one, but its certainly a good idea to look under setup, i recall seeing that CAN reversing option when i first enabled the setup menu.

Cheers

Turns out the new controller I've installed now offers this option once I'd sorted out the issues with the install, woohoo...

And just to answer kb's question, yes the unit does detect the can reversing.

Thanks all for your input

It was the lack of second speaker holding you back then...

Yes does seem that way.
