Depends on the diesel, although all those potential failure items you mention are standard on anything brand new now of course.

On mine I only have the turbo to worry about, but as the use of turbos with petrol engines continues to increase, there is a potential worry factor there for someone buying a petrol turbo vehicle as well.

Then you have the case of TSI engine problems and failures of course. So it ends up being swings and roundabouts :)

How did you handle the test drive and that on it? I can imagine every boy racer and tire kicker wanting a spin, did you ask for license or that?

I have the 1.8 TSI and from what i have read the tensioner problems on these would seem to be less than that of the 2.0 TSI unit. Prior to this car i had a Leon with the 1.9 tdi 130 engine, lovely engine, economical, powerful , but fancied a change and as i dont do that many miles so went back to Petrol, some days seems like a good decision, others not..

he was an honest 55yr old local guy with his mate, we established that we had mutual friends /collegaues in the area from the off so he wasnt going to crap on his own doorstep so to speak. when it came to testdrive, I took the keys for his a4 and he took it out.

know what you mean though, anybody else and I would have been in the passenger seat, it was only due to the above and the fact I've jiggered my back that I did it that way
