Warm start problem

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem. When the engine is cold ie left overnight or a few house the car starts fine. But when the engine has warmed up and turned off and then try to re start the engine it doesn't start first time and sometimes takes 3 goes but always starts eventually. As this problem has me stumped.

Any ideas welcome

Cheers

Stuart

Coolant temperature sensor busted making the car think the engine is cold and thus overfuelling would be my first port of call.

Is there anyway to check it or is it a case of start changing parts and crossing fingers?

Vague memory of cam or crank sensor causing this issue, VCDS might be able to tell which is up the spout, assuming its thrown a fault code.

It's not thrown up any lights on the dash but getting it plugged in might have a fault code on it.

My BLT ibiza also does this. Starts fine when cold but when already up to temp it takes a few seconds longer. Sometimes feels as though it doesn't want to start.

Will it have a fault code stored even if the EML isn't on?

I'm not sure but if a sensor isn't working you would have thought something will be picked up.

Our Seat Cordoba ASZ did this too.

Was pretty much the last straw with getting rid of it.

Would need to turn it over for about 10 seconds before it would start.

Either coolant temp sensor or crank/camshaft sensor.

Anyway of actually identifying which one it is? Rather than replacing all...

Not always.

It might just be a matter of monitoring the output of the sensors and comparing that to the expected values. The temp sensor is easy to do as when up to temp the engine should be reading about 80-90c but if the sensor reports less then there's the problem.

My mpg went down a touch which is a good sign my car needs oil. So I checked the dip and it was just at the bottom of the level marker. So put about 600ml in it and the problem has gone and now it starts warm or cold. Not sure if that's good it's fixed or bad that low oil was the problem :S
