burning smell

Featured Replies

does anyone else get what seems like a burning smell from their vRS when driving, I think its oil but not sure

All I want to know is if its normal

Not really normal.

Is it a new car still running in, brakes and tyres needing some usage or how many miles,?

what type of burning smell, through the heater, from the engine compartment,

underneath and the exhaust or from where.?

The fuel smell can be strong when cold and running rich, cat smell or when giving the car a bit of sporty driving.

EDIT, sorry not spotted the 'i think it is oil'.

Have you checked your oil level with the car up to running temperature.

*How old is the car?*

When brand new they smell after running in for a while.

If not check oil levels and for anything stuck on exhaust/under engine - plastic bag etc

cant say that I noticed anything when I looked under the bonnet but will have another look

Do you have the hot air blower on when you smell burning ?

I seem to be getting a burning smell when I have the blower on max head and full speed thought it was just because the car is new with 2000 mls on.

Would this be correct ?

Cheers

blowers not sent to full on heat or speed but I wonder if its when its changing between hot and cold because i've got it set to a certain temp

it smells a bit like the exhaust gases from a diesel (carbon smell) does the engine burn anything off like diesels do?

Is the smell always there.

Starting when cold and reversing.

(the heater inlet vents should close as you reverse and close off fumes, thats when the fan speed increases.)

Is the smell there in traffic at slower speeds,

then once you are going out in the country at faster speeds?

?? What heater setting are you on, is A/C Auto on or off, heat setting? You are on Air in and not recycle?

What fuel, 99 ron Shell V or Tesco Momentum?

You do get a stronger smell when the car is running rich and the consumption is around the 25 mpg mark IME

Best get it checked out at a Dealers if you think it is not just normal fumes. Hydrocarbons smell.

Just incase of a leaking exhaust, cat etc or something that can cause harm to you and passengers.

Easy to get gassed in a vehicle.

Here Peter has been picking up on the pretty normal smell with some new cars & 99 ron fuel.

its not always there, it lasts about 5secs then goes then might come back again after 1/2hr. Its not at any particular speed and the heater is always being changed (AC not on on, air in from outside not recirc)

Maybe worth running the A/C constantly for a day or 2 and see if it is still there.

The A/C will freshen the car and take moisture and smells from the car.

Cost nothing really to run with the A/C on in a vRS,and i have tried when going for very good MPG results.

(i know about costs of alternator and using power, one flooring of the throttle can undo all the economy stuff.)

I happen to never really use A/C in cars except when making sure the car is dry inside and stopping moisture from freezing overnight.

Probably best to get the car checked out if you are concerned by it.

with it being intermittent I just wondered if was normal (i will say I have got a sometimes annoying sense of smell)

I was also having same problem, When i get this checked and found problem with heater, coil was damaged causing burning coolant and passing smell through vents.

I am not sure with your car as it is very new, and less possibility to damage heater coil, still prefer to get this checked...

I suspect its oil, it has used from the dont fill to near the bottom of the hatched part (3.5 weeks and 800miles). Touch wood the last few days havent smelt it but it does need topping up (no light on)
