Fuel in the Engine Oil

Featured Replies

Hi guys and gals.

A question.

I am pretty sure I have ptrol in my engine oil.

First of all it stinks of petrol when I check the level on the dip stick.

Secondly I noticed that dipstick "look wrong" whne checking the level.

Thee are two lines, onle "thick oil " line and above that "wet line".

From what I read this is a critical failure of the engine for a number of reasons, mostly faulty injectors or piston rings failure.

Alos my fuel economy is much lower than generaly reported around here.

I will post a photo of the dipstick shortly.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Jabo

i would say injector seals mate. Piston rings should cause some blue smoke on acceleration.

Careful that the contamination doesnt lean the oil too much or you will have internal failures too. Still under warranty?

I'd say it's almost certainly started as injector seals anyway, because you simply shouldn't be over-fuelling significantly these days.

Bought it new a month ago and it done 1700 miles so far and 5 years warranty.

Just checked the stick again and there's only one line with engine stome cold, not more "oil line" and "fuel line". Still stinks like hell

Called dealership and they told me to call Skoda Assistance so a mech can come and establish if the car is safe to drive

Assistance just called andthey will be here in 20 minutes.

RAC chap came in. He smelled the Stick of Horror, shaked his head and proceeded to do a test. Held the stick and then tried to set light to it with his lighter. As it didn't catch fire he said all is OK. He also said that oil pressure light would come on if oil was too thin.

I asked about injector sels failure and was told that engine anagement system would light up if injector(s) were not holding pressure.

Borewash he summarily dismissed.

As a parting advice he said if I am still worried ask for early oil change.

What do you think?

Thats probably good advice on the oil change, but not sure its a 'dont worry' situation.

Engine management light may not come on, but a fault may be logged

have an oil change and following day do a stone cold level ground, oil level check. Then keep doing so daily, if you perceive the oil level rising, even just a little, be more forthright with them.

Just out of interest did you read about these faults before you noticed the issue??

i feel it pertinent to mention also that 5w30 fully synth oil, in a petrol engine will smell like petrol if its been in a while, for same reason that diesel pans usually go black with soot from the fuel.

It may just be a normal situation - do the oil level check daily, see if it rises.

Ha ha ha, are you fishing for a paranoid vRS owner?

I spent few months reading about vRS, twincharger, stats, faults and anything I could find even beofre i bought the car. I even joined briskie few months before the car was delivered

I will do oil and filter change but this will be after X-mas as no time nor money before we go away for the break. I wanted to change the oil after the running in period anyways.

I first started thinking about bore wash and fuel in the oil when after oil checking once I got higher level than the previous oil check reading. Went into panic mode but then next day or so the reading wnet back to normal level. My engine oil is almost as black as diesel's after only 1700 miles and doesn';t smell like fresh oil should, too much petrol smell in it but I suppose this is normal as I did not have a road going four stroke petrol engine car before...

Bore wash destroys cylinder bore and thinned out oil destroys the whole engine. Doesn't happen instantly but when it starts there is no going back.

As I thought, it may be normal... for the past 1000 miles oil level dropped once and stayed at the same level for say 800 miles.

RAC dude remarked the oil level is a tad low - it is at 3/4 up the hatched area.

Can you go to chat?

i recon itll be normal, as in my post directly preceding yours.

It is true that knowledge is powerful but can do your head in haha especially when you have a new car.

My neighbour has a fabia 2 1.4 tsi and i just smelt theyre oil and it too is petrol like. You would also notice a rainbow effect in the light if it was in the sump, pull dipstick and have a wee look in daylight it shouldnt have a rainbow.

Worse comes to worse at least you have cover

I had a similar problem with a strong fuel smell coming from the dip stick, I also had incredibly high oil consumption. No loss of performance and only on the odd occasion was there a very large cloud of what could only be described as diesel smoke on acceleration. After several visits to the dealer they condemned the engine saying that 1 or more of the pistons hadn't sealed in the bore properly letting oil into the cylinder. It also explained why the dip stick stunk of petrol. Needless to say the engine had to be replaced!! Also to add it was trouble free for 1600 miles until the oil light came on. I hope this helps.

Cheers man!

I done 4,600 miles since Nov last year from new and only put in 1 ltr of oil - now dipstick shows stinking oil at half way up the hatched area.

I've just bought 8ltrs of Castrol Edge Professional Long Life III 5-W30 (£80 inc delivery) and an oil filter and will be dropping oil as soon as it gets a bit warmer as I do not fancy freezing my jewels off with this sodding weather!

How is your new engine doing?

Doing good thanks. Almost no oil consumption now its got over 1000 miles on it. But if it starts to drop down again I'm going to start topping up with a thicker oil. Probably 10-40 and see what that does. I found going for a long drive and almost maxing it out helped as I drive it daily like its a diesel, so it does get coked up in my daily commute. Cleaning it out is not only practical and helps the engine but fun too.
