Am I right in assuming that if my Dad installs the VCDS program on his laptop, he can use it with my genuine cable for his own use without me breaking any licensing terms? Presumably he won't need to register the cable, as I believe that is a one time operation, and not PC dependent?

I think from reading the Ross Tech website this is the case, but prefer to be sure of myself on the licensing issue before doing it.

If you have a genuine cable the software license is with the cable not the computer which you use the software on, so your understanding is correct.
