Windows 8 Auto Updates

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My Mum has just got herself a new laptop with Windows 8. However as with all Windows (2000, XP, etc.) you get the automatic updates facility with security updates and other such like.

My Mum has tried more than once to install the updates it is already offering but it never completes. She spoke to my stepbrother who said that if she keeps installing the updates then the laptop will eventually stop working.

The question is this. Are the updates that Windows 8 offers from time to time essential, or can you disable the updates and get away with not installing them?

Thanks,

Dave

Worth installing really, as they usually include security updates, if they are showing as failed theres usually a link with an error code, click the link and it will take you to the MS site which sometimes has auto fix tools for these things.

Try this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

Best to have them tbh. Or you'll find you get nailed by some Russian extortionists.

Some updates do take time to complete (.Net updates for example.)
