poor handbrake after new disks+pads

Featured Replies

As above my handbrake is hardly working after changing the disks and pads on the back. I know they have to bed in but should I adjust them at the back of the handbrake anyway?

Im sure you can press brake pedal down and then keep pulling the handbrake (while stationary) to adjust it

I might be lying though ?

I'm assuming that you fully retracted the piston on both sides before fitting the callipers back on. As above, there is a specific procedure you need to go through to get the adjustment back to where it should be, I also can not remember the exact procedure - take a look at the Haynes book or similar source. By now you might have driven around a bit using the brakes and handbrake and have found that things have improved!

yup I wound both pistons back fully with the rewind tool. I dont have the haynes book for the fabia but I will get a look at the mk4golf one I have.

I have driven about 100 mile since fitting

Are the handbrake arms on the calipers fully releasing to their stops?

I have heard of that for drum brakes but not for disks

Try the nut at the rear of the handbrake then (under cup holder/rear ashtray) might need adjusting its a ball ache tho 1/8th turn at a time twisting spanner every time

dont even know if i can get at it with the armrest fitted

Remove the small panel at the rear of the centre console that shrouds the handbrake, it usually pulls out fairly easy, it may prising out.

You can then adjust the handbrake adjuster with a spanner, it's a tedious job but the results are great.

It needs adjusting so that the rear brakes bite on (I think the 5th notch)
