Sounds like a misfire - most often due to failed ignition coil (but not necessarily by any means). Get is scanned and it will tell you which cylinder it was

Sounds like a coilpack.

Coil.

Had this twice in ten years on 02 L&K from new.

Hardest bit is getting the engine cover off without breaking it!

You need to scan it though to find what coil is faulty. They simply prise up with a flat blade screwdriver once you have disconnected the electrical plugs from the back of them.

If you are a bit tight, have a fault code reader, and are mechanically minded, you could swap te pack from the misfiring cylinder (assuming that's what it is) with one of the others and see if the misfire follows. If it doesn't then you've saved buying a new coil (they're cheap but a lot of people suggest replacing all four).

As for replacing all four, I'm 50/50 on this. It's common belief that when one goes, the others follow. It seems sensible that these things only last so long and if one is end of life the others can't be far away - but on the other hand if one has failed 'early' there's no reason the others will. On one car I owned, I replaced one coil and traded it two years later having had no further problems.
