Temperature dial and sensor issues

Featured Replies

Afternoon, hoping someone can give me a helping hand with my temperature issues....

A couple weeks ago I was halfway through a 400 mile trip and my red temp warning light came on beeping and went off again seconds later, at the same time the needle was going from 50 to 100 and back again. I stopped to check my coolant and found no problems at all, it was a tiny bit over filled and seemed just a nice temp, the car was running perfectly so I carried on my way trying not to let the beeping drive me nuts.

When I got home I did a little light reading and decided it must be the temp sensor not working so today I put a new one in from Skoda, this has fixed my beeping issue and the red light but the temp gauge is still up and down like a yo-yo...

Any ideas?? Electrical plug maybe???

Cheers

Hi i had this happen with my first octavia vrs. Turned out it was the water pump, when we removed it half of it was missing.

Does the temp do up when in slow moving traffic and drop when at speed?

Either you have got unlucky and the replacement sender is part-duff or your water pump is failing....

Originally it was totally erratic however today when in gear and moving it was at 50 but when idle in neutral it reads 90...

I'll be pretty miffed if its the water pump, that is barely 18 months old!

Any other suggestions before I get really skint really quickly??

By the way it's a 1.8T 20v in an Octavia elegance

Stat stuck or water pump would be my guess..

I hod forgotten about the stat (as that don't seem to fail on the diesels like they do the on the petrols). Given it is 50 when moving and 90 when stationary I would revise my thinking to stat first.

In my experience if it's at 90 and no hotter when stopped and goes down when moving it's the thermostat stuck open.

They fail on the VAG diesels too.

They fail on the VAG diesels too.

Is that the voice of experience?

Indeed it is.

That is one thing which hasn't broken on my car.... yet... :giggle:

Cheers gents, is changing the stat a pain? Haven't tinkered with this car too much...

First off make sure it's the stat, noticed in your original post it went to 100, when my stat went it only went to 90 when stationary, never went above that just below.

Was told by my mechanic that it w

When it went to 100 I was running the old temp sensor so I'm not sure I can trust it, don't really know what to do!

Try a new stat first, symptoms do point to stat. If still having problems after that look into water pump and Cambelt kit.

UPDATE.....

I went on a 30 mile run this am, when I am driving normally and accelerating the temp is down on 50. When I brake or unload the engine it's goes up to 90.

I decided to stop to see what it did unloaded in neutral but with revs, it sits at 90 even if I rev right up to 4k soon as I loaded the engine again and pulled away it dropped straight back down to 55...

WTF????

Yes it was and tested

Should of replaced it at the same time, how did they test it?

Only correct way is with a pan of water and a thermometer. You have to watch as the water heats up and see what temp the stat starts opening.

A faulty stat doesn't just stick open, the stat can also be faulty over time and start to open too soon.

Just Google thermostat opening too soon and read the results.

It was tested with a thermometer but I'm going to change it this weekend anyway as I still have the problem, I have also changed the expansion tank in the vein hope it was that! It wasn't!

I also spoke to the garage that did my cam belt and water pump and the fitted a water pump with metal impella so that should be out of the picture!

A guy at work seems to think the oil level sensor feeds into the same circuit and might need changing but I think he could be full of it...
