Rev matching in new Skoda manuals possible

Featured Replies

I am no heel and toe hero but i do sometimes engine reve match with a blip between gears on downchanges to smooth the jerk of Diesel engine braking. However Skoda limits revs in neutral to 3 or 4 k now right so does this make rev matching difficult especially going down to lower gears when pushing on. Alternatively as the other bloke says on this thread should i get a DSG and get perfect matched shifts every time lol ? :p

The purpose of rev matching is to minimise the work the clutch has to do by matching engine and road speed and (imho) it's a good thing to do at all times. Heel 'n' toe is slightly separate in that you're rev matching under braking. One thing I'd consider though is what is to be gained by changing to a gear in a diesel that is already at 4k revs - are you using it for engine braking? Another approach would be to use the brakes to slow to the speed you want (brakes act on all four wheels rather than just the driven wheels) and then do a single rev-matched gear change. I forget whether the Fabia lets you heel 'n' toe as I think the brake pedal stops you being able to free rev?

Btw, I've driven a few DSG cars now and I'm still not a particular fan. Yes, the gear changes are lightning fast, but for me it takes the skill and driver involvement out of a well executed, rev-match gear change and I'll be sticking to manual cars - I am a bit odd though :D

Doing some reading up on Audi, it seems that the 4k rev limit is only in force until the clutch is depressed the first time and then it should rev to the red line. No idea whether that's the case or not though :D

Interesting and yea i can heel and toe in the mk 1 VRS if i want though pedal design is rubbish and the diesel is hardly mega rev responsive. I normally give it a blip between third and second to snooth things out a bit. The higher gears are pretty close.
