Clicking sound from rear brakes..... Please help :-)

Featured Replies

Hi, I have recently bought a 1.9tdi octavia, the rear discs and pads needed changing. I got round to doing this yesterday and all went well.... So I thought. I now seem to have a constant clicking noise from the rear brakes when I am braking! I used copper grease on the back of the pads and on the edges and also on the hub where the new disc fitted. I've not had this issue before so any help would be greatly appreciated! I wondered if the springs built into the pads where maybe something to do with it? Many thanks in advance :-)

Not being funny Dan but if my rear brakes were making noises after a brake job id be stripping it down and re-tracing my work ASAP.

That was the first thing I did. Thank for your helpful reply

Did you use cheap pads? Does the clicking get worse as the car comes to a stop and the road is slightly uneven?

Yes I used allied Nippon pads and it becomes more aparent as you slow to a stop.

That's the problem mate cheap aftermarket parts don't always fit, they are too small and rattling around in the carrier, nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. Should I change them for a better brand/oem or will they ' 'settle' in?

No problem...its unlikely they'll settle in and it'll only happen on slightly uneven tarmac, what happens is as you come to a stop the suspension moves up and down causing the wheel to change speed fast/slow/fast/slow and in turn the disc changes speed causing the pads to rattle around as your foot isnt hard enough on the pedal for the piston to hold them firmly in place. If you do an emergency stop they wont make a noise. As for changing them its up to you, its unlikely there will be enough play to dislodge them. If you can live with it then dont bother just buy better next time. Ive experienced it a few times and thats what it sounds like to me by what you describe.
