Buying From "The Car People" - Advice

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Been away from the Skoda fold for a couple of years after an Audi tried to face rape my Fabia VRS and wrote it off So Hello again!!

I'm currently Looking for a TDI Octavia VRS less than 12 months old and with the than 10k on the clock... Had I had the money a month ago I could have had my pick, got the colour I wanted most and at the price I wanted. Missed out on a '62 plate in white with 6k on the clock from a main dealer for £15k .

Now I'm in the position to buy I'm left with very limited choice (10 nationally under £16k on Autotrader).

I've seen this one 2012OctaviaVRS-TheCarPeople but the thought of buying from "The car people" rings alarm bells, and I’m not sure why. '12 plate manual TDI Octavia VRS, 8800 ish on the clock.

The car is up for £15499 but can get 300 knocked off of that. It's ex lease, another factor that puts me off, ex lease for a company car is in essence a 1 previous owner car, but there is the risk that it was just used as a pool car.

The car does not have a service book, which means something could be a miss but in reality, if you were going to clock a car and misplace the service book to hide it's history surely you'd just buy a new book to avoid suspicion???

Another factor putting me off is that the sales guy was a stereotypical bell end. When I said I was going to go away and check that I had enough funds he said "This is all irrelevant then" and walked off. haha ****. Chased me out the door still.....

So after waffling on, I'd just like to gauge opinion / get some advice. Would you buy from the car people? Is it a bit suss that there's no service book? Would you buy and ex lease?

Any advice on where else I could look other than the trader would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for taking the time to read and sorry if I’m in the wrong section.

Alan

If it don't feel right don't buy it. Gut instinct is normally the one to go with in my experience .

I would never buy a second hand car without a service book

Where can it be?

Is it covering something up?

If in doubt...Walk away

Thanks!! Think that's all the off put I needed :) I'm so indecisive, just need a gentle nudge sometimes.

I've seen this, the mileage put me off as i was looking for under 10,000 but it is from a main dealer and I have a branch locally, so as long as they give me what I want I'll probably put a deposit down tomorrow :)

1/ Speak with your local main dealer give them the reg and see if they have any history on the car. I assume its just had a PDI as if on variable a service would not be due for at least another year or 10000 miles.

2/ Not all lease cars are thrashed.

3/ Can you really thrash a diesel.

4/ It should still have 2 years warranty left.

Though as brettreading says go with your gut feeling if it doesn't feel right don't buy it.

Ex-lease?

8,800 miles?

Ex-hire car?

That was what i was worried about - I bought my current car thinking, great, one careful owner. V5 arrives - yeas one owner, fecking Enterprise.... Wasn't impressed but car was sound and after kicking off got another years warranty banged on.

So now I'll always ask who the previous owner was (unless buying new :))

The lease company was SLD Automotive who were contracted for our company cars until about a year ago so chances are it would be lease rather than hire but who knows...

Good choice its only 2500 miles more than the limit you set...... better colour than the boring grey car people one (imo) .... black wheels, spacers, sports springs and a map will make it perfect (other than the diesel engine!).

If u went for the estate you can pick up a brand new one for £17100 from drive the deal.

this one in blue in nottingham , you might be able to get a better deal if you take bow and arrow plus little john with you to stand on his toes....

less milage in blue

Good Spot! I now have my heart set on white and have 2 in my sights so will do some phone haggling tomorrow :)

Can't quite stretch to new at the mo, if I could I'd be waiting a few months for the new one :)

No service book and such an age points to it being a repossession if you ask me. Nothing wrong with that, and I had an Astra that started life as a hire car and it was good as gold.

But agree go with your gut instinct.

My wife hasn't forgiven me for not trying for a VRS I spotted several when having to get a new company car but didn't want to upset system at work too much so went for a L&K instead. I need to get her some blinkers and blind folds so she don't remind me every time we see one of her choice.

Ment to say also i got me first company car with the firm I now work from car people in wakefield. I wont degrade my self by saying what it was but the one thing i hated about them was the lack of distance for the test drive. On main road and to round about and back, wouldn't let me take it on motorway.

I personaly would never buy from these car shops.

A friend of mine works at one and when i said i was going to have a look he said, "have a look but for gods sake dont buy from them!"

There are so many horror stories about these companies id never trust them

Have bought 2 cars from the Car People. My first was a new Fiesta. Never had any problem with it. My second was a Skoda Fabia. Only problem was a faulty switch that raises and lowers the headlight beam. They replaced this without too much trouble. So no complaints really about the company.

That white one is at the same dealer i bought mine from, they were running a white 12 plate vrs as a demo when i was there last year, this may be the same one,if it is then it had damage to the rear bumper when i saw it. Best to check it over when you view it.

Thanks, will check that, hoping ot ex demo. Usually ex demos are spec'd up, this has nothing exciting on it :)

Find out who the previous owner is & ring up & ask its history, details will be on the log book

Lease companies etc only run cars on 3rd party insurance so they are often sold when damaged to the highest bidder & because no Insurance co has paid out they will be unrecorded on the HPI register. the seller even if a large company will have a bill of sale which will reflect its condition. Cars that are sold for salvage often have no documents with them hense no service history

This as an example is an un recorded & at Auction shortly, looks like its been partially stripped & more found to be wrong http://www.copart.co...=SEARCH_RESULTS

NEVER assume because a car has no accident history at hasnt been badly damaged

ON the oppopsite if a genuine car the original owner & certainly if a large company will have an invoice record if nothing else of work carried out on the car, from that it will be easy to recreate a service history, blank service books can be bought & Im sure whoever has worked on it wont mind stamping the book if asked very nicely

Sounds like a lot of cash considering the Mk3 is just round the corner. Plenty around so if is smells fishy walk away.

if you have that kind of money I'd be checking the dealers for a new MK2 facelift still quite a few left --nice vrs estate at crewe it's still "NEW" as the other est' is not out yet

Come on Jazzmag "spill the beans" which one did u get
