Mk1 Occy VRS or....

Featured Replies

Hello

Im having trouble deciding on a new car!

I have £2000 to spend..

Im previously a Honda fan, but id like to try something VAG

I was going to buy a 1996 Honda civic VTI-S 160hp, and i also like the Mk1 occy VRS!

Im cut between the two to be honest, ones a small fast hatchback thats very good handling also with thousands of tuning options... and ones a 4 door (iv never driven one so i dont know about handling)

Anyone swing me one way or the other please!!!

Regards

Adrian

By virtue of the fact that you came to a SKODA forum to ask I don't expect you will get a well rounded opinion about a Honda but in my honest opinion go for the VRS. The options are also awesome and if you have never owned a VAG car before why not try something new? Go and find one to test drive- I imagine that you will be pleasantly surprised! Good luck

The octy is ok standard on the handling front, rarb upgrades it to good, adding coilovers it's really good.

It's also easy to work on fitting parts etc, tuning wise there are plenty of options available

Thank you

I came because i wanted proper opinions on the Vrs, everyone i ask says "there ok for the money"

Im wanting to try a vag as iv never driven one! i like the Mk1 occy the most

I know a bit about vag's as most my mates have them, but what sort of power is capable from the 20v T on standard internals in the occy? 220/230 with a remap and Intake and exhaust?

how far will i have to go for 300hp?

Thanks

They aren't ok for the money, they are more like a understated bargain for the money lol

Yeah i seen the prices drop considerably, think im going to go ahead an purchase one and see how it goes

Got mine around 3 years and over 30k ago and haven't once regretted it. I'd look for one in a garage first and take it for a long test drive, just to see if it was for you. Some people have different tastes, make sure you like it first m8

I worked for honda when the 1.8 vti-s came out & to be honest i was disapointed with it,id rather have a civic 1.6 vti instead,no contest for me if its the vti-s or the mk 1 octy vrs,mk 1 octy vrs wins hands down for me.

Thanks guys, problems is there are no occy's round my neck of the woods in garages to test drive!

Are there any in the for sale section on here near to you that you could buy? I wouldnt be buying a mk 1 octy vrs from a garage nowadays, you get a better car for the money from a member on here.

Only mentioned a garage as you can be a little more unsympathetic without upsetting tge owner of one lok

If I may, my parents and sister have been running Hondas for about as long as I've had my Octy and I've driven both.

The Honda's better for occasional Carlos Fandango blasts, but the Octys are better for long "top of the green" cruises where you want to go quick but more relaxed than dropping 2 or 3 gears every time you have to brake a bit for a turn (for several hours at a stint).

Are you talking about the TDI or the vRS? The vRS has fairly long gearing (2nd will hit 70mph) so if you're looking for a bit of pull out of corners, you'll be dropping gears anyway, and if you're not, it's no different to being outside the VTEC zone in a Type-R. At least imhe :D

I love both but they are chalk and cheese !

My civic was fast 170hp in a light shell that handled very well, it was raw and noisy and loud, the trim falls off and rattles! but my god the fun factor is 100! hearing Vtec scream away is pretty amazing to hear and feel!, i scared that if i buy a vRS ill get bored real quick, im intending on remapping, lowering FMIC etc etc possibly a gt28rs turbo should liven it up some what!

What do you vRS owners think?

I was thinking that, iv not been here that long and im not sure of any members in the cumbria area! there is loads of nice ones on here but are either out of my prie bracket or nearly a 9 hour round drive!
