looks like my engine might be toast

Featured Replies

Hi ALL

totally P'ssed off as on the way home today i ran over a large pice of wood dropped off a lorry. It hit the sump and bag, sump pops and oil light on straight away

Stopped car straight away to find oil everywhere and pices of sump on the floor....

Hit the wood at 60mph

Hope the engine not cracked or melted , got AA to drop motor off at house and off to dealers tomorrow

HOW much a new engine???

Upset

ROB :( :( :(

If the engine is toast I think you'd be looking at an insurance claim mate - assuming you are fully comp that is. Might be worth notifying them sooner rather than later. Tell them you aren't making a claim merely notifying them of an incident.

It might not be as bad as you think though, sounds like you stopped pretty quickly. A big part of the cost will be labour.

If you stopped straight away you should be alright and may only need a new sump....those engines are pretty tough

I really hope so , worried that wood could have cracked it though :(

The same thing happened to my uncle in his Golf 110 TDi. Its essentially the same engine. Final bill came in just over

A block and pistons set up is just under 2k. Then you would have a fair few hours labour on that to transfer some parts from yours to the new one and refit it.

You'll have one or two other minor costs such as the under tray, not sure if the above price includes a sump plus all your consumables. It wouldn't be cheap thats for sure.

I really think it'll depend on how long it was running. You might be lucky.

You could ask the police if there is any video in the area and try and get details for the culprit. Maybe worth a call to the rozzers in case anyone else phoned them.

Stop worrying and get the car checked by your dealer. With luck it will just be the sump pan which was damaged. But if the wood did more damage than that, then leave it to your insurers to sort out.

new sump shouldn't be too much, if you stopped straight away then no damage should have been done.........

undertrays are expensive though!!!!

I did 2 sumps before fitting a metal engine and gearbox guard. Cost for sump repair is about

The engine undertray is not that expensive. I had one replaced a couple of months back. IIRC was supplied and fitted for less than

The PD is quite different. Trouble is the first place to loose oil when oil pressure bottoms out is the top end. The camshaft seizes in the head and throws the belt off. Also doesnt do the turbo any favours.

The only thing you can do is whack a new sump on, oil it up and keep the fingers crossed.

Don't worry mate.

I split the sump my Octy RS at 90mph over a crest  near Keilder Forest last weekend. Drove for another 10 miles before the oil light came on, then stopped immediatly it came on.

The AA towed me home, and i bought a new sump from Skoda,

Call the police immediately. Did you see the company/type/colour/age or the wagon???

Edit: It is a drivers' responsibility to secure his load - he's completely liable - contact the RHA maybe?

Absolutelty agree- phone the police! My Dad came across some metal tree grating in the road some years ago. He had to brake hard and a guy went into the back of us. The police were fantastic and tracked down the company responsible.

Worth doing. Good luck and sorry to hear about the accident.

Jut - there are a few threads running on here about the Sump Guard.
