Keys? Remote central locking? Ignition? Hows it all work?

OK, I know the basics, but I need to know what I need when it comes to my new setup.

I have a nice shiny new barrel with matching key, which I *may* not need to fit. I obviously have an existing barrel too, with TWO keys which I'd prefer to keep & use due to the "spare" and also lessening the workload of the conversion...

But then there's the remote central locking (bigK job aftermarket) AND the original door locks in the two front doors, which I've NO intention of changing.... So, the question is what's the best thing to do?

Keep original barrel and keys, but somehow reprogram them to allow the original barrel and keys to start up new matching ECU/dashpod combination? Swap barrel so the new key (which is nice flip key as it happens) starts up car without the need for re-programming, but then reprogram ONE of my original keys to have a spare back-up.... THEN, what about the door locks should the RCL fail any time? Do I need to keep a key with its original programming in case I need to flick a lock with a key, not a button? Does the key "do" anything techie when inside a door lock, or is it simply the "shape" that opens it, like a yale house door lock? Also, with bigK's remote central locking, will it be unaffected? Its a little black box inserted into the "computer" underneath the steering wheel, so hoping it will receive the remote's signal as normal, and still open the car up as it always has. Then, the vRS flick key has a button on it too, I think for the boot opening as well? Will THAT work with my car when all is done?

All the possibilities have got me well confused, so would love some brief clarity over my best realistic way of dealing with the remote central locking / ignition issue.

Thanks.

Getting the old key to work with new imobilser, I assume thats what you need to achieve at the end of what you are doing. I guess its possible, but you may need the code that would have been contained in the plastic strap that was attached to the new set of keys when the car was new.

If you have the security code for the new dash insert there is no reason why you cant just code your original keys to the new engine/dash keeping your original lock set.

 Reminds me I need to ring a certain breaker up in Manchester area... :o

That would be damn

But would the remote central locking still work too? With the original aftermaket button? And therefore, the door locks too, should the RCL ever fail on me?

Your cdl will work as it normally does as you will still be using your original keys and remotes.

 I've just lost a stone in weight... off my shoulders :D

The problem I WAS having was that the breakers wouldn't give me the reg plate without the concession of the insurance company.. Now I need the chassis and MY date too. :o Then I need to get VAG COM working, or bribe someone with Devon's finest real ales, to come and do it for me once I'm pretty much done with the mechanical side of things. :D
