BBC2 8pm, Sun, 'Driven: The Fastest woman in the World'.

Featured Replies

Documentary following Suzie Wolff,

determined to be the first woman to race in F1.

EDIT,

been told that this is only on BBC 2 Scotland,

& that there was already a woman that raced in 'Formula One' in the late 1950's

Maria Theresa Filippis.

What about Lella Lombardi - only woman to have scored points in a GP in 1970's in Spain (although there was something funny about the race - cancelled midway or something)

It will still be an interesting watch. I know she's not that fast but anything that gets F1 more publicity is a good thing.

Anyone with Sky can get BBC 2 Scotland. Also on iPlayer

Davina Gallitza (sp) and Desire Wilson - Neither of them raced in the FIA series, but the British Aurora F1 series of the 1970s ran under the same technical rules.

I'm sure Davina Gallitza raced in F1

Certainly not Wolf if its Wolff she calls her self.

It could be that it is a Ladies choice to keep her Maiden Name or take the Husbands surname. (no funny icon faces available.)

I thought it was OK and Toto is less miserable than I thought he was. Always comes across like Arnie when he's ever interviewed. She never did that well in DTM but when you see her team mate struggling in the same car you do begin to wonder what she would be like in decent machinery. Same goes for most really. The fitness stepup to F1 is quite big so as long as she gets fitter she should be OK. Will she ever race in F1? I doubt it. But if Maldonado gets banned for a race then we may see her

Since she's a fellow Scot, I've followed her career fairly closely. What didn't come out from that documentary was that, 2 or 3 years ago when the DTM consisted of Audi vs Mercedes and they ran limitted numbers of this year's, last year's and the year before that's cars, Suzie was more often than not the fastest driver in the 2YO car, and beating a few of the current and last year cars sometimes, which was about as much as could reasonably be expected.

Yeah I read up on her when she was first mentioned for an F1 test and say she was often in older cars. She can't have been that bad when (I think) in her first DTM season Jean Alesi couldn't get past her. :D

She also beat some guy called "Cool Hard" or something similar sometimes, and I've a feeling that neither Katherine Legge or Vanina Ickx (daughter of Jackie) saw which way Suzie went as a rule. What she never got was placed in a "most favoured team".

I hope she does well but she is only testing.

It's a bit of a shame she's so late to the game, most F1 drivers get their break in their early 20s.

I'd still smash her though

I'd still smash her though

Is Susie Wolff ever going to be fast enough to drive in a F1 race, or is all the Practice Sessions in F1 just about a very rich husband humouring

the missus?

I'm not sure she's had an untroubled session yet? So I'm not sure either way.

She also beat some guy called "Cool Hard" or something similar sometimes, and I've a feeling that neither Katherine Legge or Vanina Ickx (daughter of Jackie) saw which way Suzie went as a rule. What she never got was placed in a "most favoured team".

Ms Wolff never won a single race, in her 14 year career to date, despite racing for quality teams including multiple championship winners Comtec and Alan Docking Racing.  Indeed her career high point after Formula Renault was scoring 4 points in 6 whole years in the DTM.

Whereas, Katherine Legge won 3 times in Formula Atlantic (including her debut at Long Beach) and had 2 more podiums on the way to 3rd in the Championship. She has also twice finished 6th in Champ Car (CART Indycar) races and was the first woman ever to lead one (for 12 laps at Milwaukee).  And has been paid to "race" works sports cars for major manufacturers in recent years.

As you suggest, one of them is in a different league. The other has got a nice little earner testing F1 cars for a team part-owned by her husband. Talk about placed in a "favoured" team.

Regarding the others, Davina Galicia failed to qualify for 3 GPs and Desire Wilson for 1.

They did both race, against some real talent, in the British Aurora F1 series for the same spec Cosworth cars as were in F1 GP at the time.

Davina managed 3 podiums in an outdated Surtees.

Desire was on the podium 8 times, including the only F1 win by a lady to date at Brands Hatch in 1980.

Both records also comfortably eclipse the results of Susie Stoddart-Wolff.

No & Yes

And re BBC's title: Fastest Woman?

Kitty O'Neil may have some thing to say about it

So might Brittany Force (or her sisters Ashley & Courtney)

Not forgetting Michèle Mouton. Ok it's not F1 but arguably competed in one of the most exicting and dangerous motor racing events ever made.

If we're going to do "selective statistics", Katherine Legge is also the only person I can think of to have been fired as a racing instructor (or tester) for the amount of damage she did to the employer's machinery.

No & Yes

Well, any of the Force daughters, as long as there's some evidence that they're aware of the existence of "corners" ;)
