excessive brake pedal travel

Featured Replies

Hi lads and lasses. I have a question for you lot as i'm totally baffled. I'v done a search on here but never found anyone having the same problem. Similar but not the same. Anyway, i tried to do my disks and pads on my vrs and couldnt get the piston to screw back in with or without the bleed nipple done up so i thought stuff it i'll put the car back together and get someone better out to fix it, but when i done the bleed nipple back up i stripped the threads. i work with torque wrenches all day every day going from 6.8nm right the way upto 800nm in some occaisions so know when somethings tight but this just didnt feel tight in the least. anyway by time i could get someone out to do a temp fix while i was waiting for my new calipers to come (thought i may aswell replace both sides) all the brake fluid had drained out so refilled the system once the bleed nipple hole had been tapped and plugged and free'd up and got all the air out the system starting furthest caliper to closest to the bottle and now the brake padel goes down approx 2-3 inches before it starts working properly where as before it only used to go down about 1 inch before the pedal went hard. Now also when sat still the without the engine on if you press the brake it travels down approx 2 inches then stops for a sec then drops another 1-2 inches as if it has got air in the system. now i have got brand new disks pads and calipers on the rear and its still doing exactly the same. the only thing i can think of is that the master cylinder has died while its had no fluid in but dont wanna spend silly money on a new one incase its not that. Pleeeeaaasssseeee somebody help me. I'm baffled. Could the knackered caliper of been hiding a fault?

Sorry for the essay but wanted to add as much deatail as possible.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Mick

I had this a few year ago on a vrs after bleeding all the brakes. Hold the brake pedal down and get someone to crack open one of the brake lines at the master cylinder, after you get a shot of fluid out nip it up and repeat on the other lines up at the master cylinder. should then be back to normal.
