AV - Changes over to a connected external video source*.

Question........

Where do i plug in the external video device into the Columbus unit??

Is there a hidden AV in socket hiding in the glove box or some where else?

Aux advises audio only so can not be that?

Any suggestions on where i plug in or am i missing something?

The AV input is on the back of the unit I believe, you'd have to have it out of the dash to plug something in. Also it is not a 'standard' AV socket, you'll need an adaptor to the multi plug (these are easy to find on the web).

Do you know which one or have a link for the adaptor?

Do you know if it is then plug and play or do i then need to get vcds coding for to appear in dvd menu as av?

You require a RNS510 (Columbus) AV Multimedia interface.

I have installed TV in my Skoda which uses this type of interface....

Check out post #15.....

http://www.briskoda....v/#entry2946765

Search for AV MULTIMEDIA INTERFACE RNS510 on Ebay UK

I see there is a module for about £55 inc post.... cheapest I have seen.

I have the more expensive Tera module noted in my post above..... it's a bit flakey but generally works ok.

You will also need the use of VCDS to set the TV present flag.

Hope this helps

Just noticed on the cheaper module......

For the early RNS510. The unit only supports upto 1100 firmware.

Thanks for your comments, so the Tera AV multimedia interface is the one you fitted after you had the expert installation removed?

And you installed this with the DTV-1080 yourself?

Questions.

Does this combination now work ok with out freezing your columbus head unit?

What vcds coding will i need to get somebody to change for me?

Any instructions on how to remove the columbus head unit from my car?

Does the Tera adaptor have 2 av inputs so on the media menu screen will i get the TV and AV greyed out buttons at the top to work?

You say in your comments not for the faint hearted!!!! Can you explain any more.

Thanks for your advise think i am now starting get the information i have been trying to research for some time.

Thanks

Look at this manual ....

http://epc.net.pl/manuales/MA-460_INTERFACE_RNS510.pdf

Very similar to Tera interface.

You will see details of the wiring, AV inputs and programming instructions.

One AV input and one reversing camera input on the Tera module.

Yes, I installed all the equipment noted in my post... I am experienced in this field.

If you are not familiar in removing radios/ panels/ and electrical wiring in your car I would not attempt to carry out the installation yourself.

Not for the faint hearted !... Only carry out the installation if you have the necessary skills and experience. Making errors in connecting equipment to the CanBus system could have major problems resulting in your car being disabled.

Yes you will need VCDS

DCC, thanks for details posts ad advice on this subject. I have VW Passat GT CC TDI 170 DSG which has a factory fitted RNS510 including front and rear PDC. I decided to fit a rear view camera (the pop-out badge type) and stupidly bought one for and after-market head unit, meaning it has simple A/V video out and not the multi-pin interface required. No matter, like yourself I bought a Tera RNS 510 multi-media interface. It's all connected up but try as much as I try I cannot get it to display on my unit.  I've proved the camera is Ok by plugging in to a proper TV, I select reverse, the camera pops out and displays the picture.  I have VCDS and have enabled the reverse camera function, so when I select reverse I get a the option of choosing the camera on the screen but it's blank.  I've tried for hours tweaking with VCDS but nothing.  I'm pretty experienced with electronics/IT but have to admit defeat!  The documentation that came with it was almost useless and the link you gave to the similar unit is better but the coding in my VCDS isn't quite the same to either. Any ideas/advice would be welcome?  Did you simply hook yours up, enable in VCDS and it worked? Thanks.

I have not installed a reversing camera, but if it helps you could try temporary connecting the camera to the video input for the TV on the Tera interface. It's a 1V PP input, would guess your camera is the same.
You will have to set the TV present flag with VCDS. This should enable the Video selection on the RNS510.
Select video input and power the camera
Hopefully this will prove the Tera interface to the RNS510.

If the camera output is different from the Tera TV input (PAL/NTSC) you should still see something if the interface is working.

.... May have some other ideas once you prove the interface is working.

Have you reset your Columbus unit?

I am about to install this unit tomorrow, although not a pop-out type, maybe it's the same procedure for coding etc.:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/271075583401?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I must code:

Adress 37 Navigation or Adress 56 Radio RCD 510

Navigation/ Radio must be set for reversing camera (high in your case, low in mine)

Byte 03 - Bit 6 auf 1 setzen – x1xxxxxx

Then RESET by holding < + > + i/Stern

This activates the reversing camera option.

Then on to:

Cars with PDC Funktion

Adress 10 – Parking help (or something like that) - Byte 00 - HEX 10 >>> auf >>> HEX 30

Choose Vehicle self diagnose.

Worth a shot at least :-)

DCC and Mureren, thanks for your help, much appreciated. So I tried again tonight with VCDS. DCC when you say “connect to the video input for the TV on the Tera interface” I take it you mean not the standard input (the one built in to the body of the unit) but use the one on the flying lead. I didn’t do this tonight as that would mean taking out the RNS 510 again (the Tera interface is tucked in behind it).  I did enable the TV Interface by selecting Controller 19 - CAN Gateway and setting Byte 4, Bit 7 - TV-Tuner – via the tick-box (changes hex from 40 to C0) and  Restart the RNS 510. But the   Video Button remains grayed out and VCDS now throws an error:

So, if I’m reading this right, you would expect the Tera unit to emulate a TV-Tuner which would activate the Video button?  Would this also result in a Controller 57 appearing in VCDS? (it’s not).  I’m starting to think it isn't working at all, I'm fairly sure I've got the wiring correct. I would guess the controller would appear even if there was no video signal to interface? I wish now I had bought the same camera unit as Mureren, it actually cost less than mine and will hopefully work as soon as you install it. Following Mureren’s advice I did also try: 37 - Navigation Byte 3, bit 6 - Back-Up Camera Low(without Control Module) installed. (This enables the camera icon in the the PDS screen). Which shrinks the PDS screen to the side and brings up a "blank" box where the picture should be. Other options are: 10 - Park/Steer Assist Byte 0 Bit 4, Optical Illustration Active (true) Bit 5, Rear View Camera installed (false). There is no option for a “high” camera, I think you need the proper VAG camera for this which (I think) has it’s own controller tied in with the steering to create the guidance lines (I never expected to see this). I’m starting to think I need an interface specifically for reversing cameras?

Looks like the RNS510 is not seeing the Tera interface.

Yes, I mean connect the camera(or any 1V pp signal source) to the Yellow Phono input connect on the body of the Tera interface. The yellow floating lead is for the reversing camera.

The Video button on the media screen should be highlighted if the RNS510 can see the Tera interface.
Simply switching the RNS510 off/on causes it to rescan for the interface... if the TV flag is set on.

I would first ensure this button is enabled, the following may help....

1... Reset all the flags you have set with VCDS back to original settings.

2... Set TV present flag on. On mines this gives errors on modules 19,37,56 and 57, but has no adverse effect, see log below

3... Check if Video button is enabled. If enabled, connect video source and select Video. Check if you see picture.

4... If Video button not enabled, check wiring. All required connections are available on rear of RNS510. Ensure CanBus polarity is correct.

5... If the RNS510 can see the Tera interface it should enable the +12V output on the Tera wiring (Grey wire) when RNS510 is switched on

We must have the RNS510 seeing the Tera interface before we proceed.

On my Superb I have the Tera interface placed in an space between the Columbus and the glove compartment... easy to access by removing glove compartment... lots of room in this location.

Hope this helps.

Thanks DCC. Followed your advice above. Removed my RNS and double-checked my wiring, all Ok. Reverted all coding back to original in VCDS, then added: Module 19 - CAN Gateway - Byte 4, Bit 7 - [57] TV-Tuner (on) and for good measure restarted my RNS and voila, the 'Video' button was activated. Stuck car in reverse to activate camera and like magic the picture appeared. Brilliant, but not so good as I have to press buttons to activate it. I moved the video lead from the video interface on the Terra body to the flying lead interface (for the reverse camera) and connected the red signal cable from the camera (goes live when camera active) to the purple from the Terra interface (to auto-switch to the reverse camera interface). I then further coded with VCDS:

37 - Navigation - Byte 4, Bit 6 - Back-Up Camera Low (on).

And restart the RNS 510 (hold - forward, reverse & eject).

When reverse is selected, there is now a "camera" button on the PDC display, Selecting this brings up the Rear View Camera.

I also coded:
10 - Park Steer assist - Byte 0, Bit 5 - Rear View Camera installed (on).

Now when reverse is selected, the RVC is 'on' by default and the OPC display is minimised to the side,it can be restored (losing the RVC display) by selecting the 'car' graphic on bottom RHS of display.

So all now working as I hoped, the only thing that I think is missing is any sort of guide-lines. I know I won't get the "active" lines but I thought I would have the basic ones?

Nonetheless I am tonight a happy guy!

Thanks again to DCC and Mureren. The documentation supplied by these devices was poor and it helps so much of you at least have an idea what to expect.  I think initially I hadn't enabled 57 -  TV-Tuner as it permanently brings up a "No Signal/Communication" error but it seems this is "normal". Once I was over that the rest was easy.  I might even  post my findings as a project because all of this would apply to anyone fitting a RVC to most all VAG cars.

Great you have your system working now.
Yes, installation info is very poor, technical support from suppliers is just as bad, they do not seem to know what they are supplying !

Can you confirm you have errors on modules 19,37, and 56 , like mines, but no adverse effect?
... maybe the Tera software has been updated to resolve the errors.

Unfortunately I cannot help you with your reversing camera guide line problem.
.... Only guessing... would if be a function built into the camera?

You now have a spare video input for say a TV or a USB/SD video player.

The Grey switched +12v wire is very convenient for switching RNS 510 add ons

Yes, I had errors on the same modules, though it seems that 37 (Navigation) and 56 (Radio) are the same thing. e.g. if you reset the DTC's on 37, they go from 56 as well. I did manage to reset the codes but I'm pretty sure they will come back.  Doesn't seem to matter.

Didn't know such a thing exisllted as USB/SD video player. Sounds interesting, I see you can get them fairly cheaply on e-bay.

So thanks again.  Next project - self install Cruise Control...

Well....mine sadly doesn't work like yours, although it should!

I can't get both the OPS and RVC to display at the same time. The camera icon shows up, i select it, the camera view is displayed, and the little white arrow to the left is minimised. Selecting that just displays the empty white box (well, the camera view is there, but not the parking sensors)

Today i visited the danish maker and dealer of VCDS, to buy a VCDS cable, and maybe get him to look at my problem. He wasn't able to solve it within a reasonable timeframe, so i left again.

Will try to see if "6C Back Up Camera" is ticked in [19] Can Gateway, and if so, if it makes a difference to untick it. (it will probably stop the 02873 error codes i get from the navigation unit).

Other than that, i can only come up with it being an old PDC controle module that isn't compatible, or an old RNS510 unit Rev. A (although with my-gti.com's 4120 firmware)
