Car amplifier

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recently installed some aftermarket speakers but my head unit amp does not produce enough power to get a sufficient volume. I want to install an aftermarket amp and was wandering if it is possible to power it off the cd changer power supply or the 12v outlet in the boot?

David

There isn't a great deal of power available on the 12v socket in the boot. I tried running a small inverter unit and that seemed to struggle. You are best off running in a dedicated (and suitably fused) wire direct from the battery, imho.

There isn't any factory wiring in the boot which has sufficient ampage capacity to run heavy current drawing kit like amps or inverters.

Your best bet is probably to buy a amp wiring kit, that comes with 4AWG red power cable, 4AWG grounding cable, RCA, speaker wire, remote signal turn-on wire and AGU fast blowing fuse holder

Numerous companies do them, ebay is probably a good starting point.

typical contents of an amp wiring kit - although thats' 8AWG cable in the pic (suitable for 1 or 2 amps)

Also, the power cable on these usually isnt big enough for a good fit. I think I used 6m on mine.

4AWG is overkill for most purposes. 8AWG is usually more than sufficient unless planning on doing a really serious install.
