Samsung Galaxy SIII car dock

Featured Replies

Having moved from an SII to an SIII I need to get a new car cradle/dock. Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, don't do a car dock for the SIII. With my SII and car dock, the phone was aware it was in a car dock and started software accordingly (Car Dock Home V3). A quick look around show that the dock for the Samsung Infuse *might* work - it doesn't. It needs an update from Samsung, which hasn't been done.

So, I came across Brodit, which seems to be popular on here. There's an "active" mount for the SIII. Other than providing power, does the active model tell the phone that it's docked?

KiDiGi do one too:

I found this as well http://www.ebay.co.u...100677973&??but at over £100, seems a bit expensive, even though it does support an external aerial.

Any other suggestions/comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can you not just set Car dock Home to start automatically when the phone pairs with the Bluetooth in your car so you could use any holder rather than a specific dock?

I don't use this app, but I do have a couple which I do have set to do this so that when paired with my car - for example: any text messages that I receive are read out over the stereo.

Have tried with the current setup, but it fails to go back to normal mode when disconnected from the bluetooth. :(

What apps are you using? (am always up for playing with new toys ;) )

why not just use an NFC tag? you can program it to do whatever you like. I use brodit and NFC on my S3

Ah, another idea into the pot! Not thought of NFC. How near is near?

Is it a "one-way" switch or does it detect when the tag is out of proximity?

NFC doesn't really work like that as I understand it -you'd want to stick a tag in the car that you touch with the phone when you get in and you'd want another tag or tags that you touch in order to tell it to do something else like go in to silent mode when you swipe the one in your office for example.

This is the app I use:

I also use SVOX TTS (text to speech) speech synthesis as I don't much care for the Google (pico) or Samsung ones, you can also correct its pronunciation:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.svox.classic&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zdm94LmNsYXNzaWMiXQ..

Ivona has the best speech synthesis I have come across, however it is buggy as it is still in beta, but when they finally release the fully finished version I would seriously consider buying it.

I have a tag that is programmed to toggle things- so when I get in I touch it and it toggles off the wifi, turns on the mobile data and bluetooth, launches the car dock app, stops the screen timing out, turns on car mode and turns up the brightness. Touch again and it reverses all of these.

works very well

I use NFC task launcher to control all of this

Ok, so NFC acts as a switch (touch on/touch off/touch another tag).

Have downloaded NFC Task Launcher, seems simple enough to use :)

Ordered some tags too. Sounds like some playing to be had :) :) :)

Car/Office/Bedside Cabinet etc etc. I suppose I could have a "normal profile" one stuck in the slip case too.

Thanks guys. I'll give this a go :)

I like that one! I saw it will trigger events based on more than just NFC. (BT and WiFi) I had to root the SIII to allow NFC Task Launcher to shut-down Car Dock Home V3, but that didn't take long.

I did, in the end, also find a cheaper SIII car-dock that sets car mode:

Less than £40 delivered from The States, so I'll keep this in mind as Plan B if ever needed.

It does seem that NFC only work when the screen is unlocked, so you have to unlock for a tag to take effect.

Yup, unlocking is the downside of nfc

The ibolt mounts are available from amazon uk now too. 35 quid I believe.

Reading the reviews: the iBolt looks great and does the job.......................until you get Jelly Bean. Apparently Samsung have removed the car-dock function from the UK release. (This is what I had read before buying the Samsung Infuse Dock, the closest official dock that fits SIII)

So, I think I'll sit on that for a while, especially as I've got the car-dock function fairly well sussed now. Using Dom's recommendation of NFC Task Launcher, when the SIII pairs with the Bluetooth it engages car-dock mode. (Car-dock mode is still in the phone, just not usable by car-dock hardware - how stupid is that!) When the Bluetooth is switched off, the phone is returned to normal mode. The advantage of the NFC Task Launcher is that you can enable/disable other stuff as well, so you can also switch on the inbuilt Car-Mode (which isn't an option in the original setup - another stupidity).

NFC Task Launcher has a massive range of what you can do to the phone, and triggered by WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. If only it had a scheduler as well........;)

Maybe you can combine it with tasker to schedule things. That might work
