Speed trap info.

Featured Replies

Last night I was driving home and was going down a road which I'm not overly familiar with. It's been built as a kind of bypass but will eventually be surrounded by houses/commercial developments. As such there is street lighting but no speed limit signs. I'm hazarding a guess that it probably is a 30mph zone. Anyway I came off the roundabout and onto the road, where round the blind bend was a policewoman with a speed gun. I was doing 35 ish but already slowing as I wasn't intending on speeding, just came off the roundabout and was a bit too heavy right footed. There was a police van in a junction and a number of police dealing with 1 other vehicle. I wasn't flagged down or anything and by the time I went past I was doing 27-28mph. As I drove past I noticed in my rear view mirror that the policewoman was writing something down..

With speed traps do they normally do you there and then or is it a case of waiting..

I know street lights normally mean 30 but I have street lights down my road and infant my whole village and its a 40 zone.

In the absence of signs indicating otherwise, street lighting means 30mph and absence of street lighting means NSL (there used to be a regulation that the street lights had to be 200 yards apart for it to be 30mph IIRC).

As to your fate, who knows, but normally you'll be dealt with on the spot by the police....

Chris

They usually deal with it there and then.

Around our way they write stuff down no matter what speed you go past, almost like some kind of survey.

If you were doing an indicated 35mph, which is really probably 33mph then you are unlikely to be in trouble IMO.

No snow covering the rear plate?

Looks like time to Re-read the Highway code and maybe slow down in built up areas if not aware of the limits.

They are maybe on this Forum and just waiting for their chance!

Cherished plates do tend to stick in the mind easier than just random Registration Numbers.

Seems my memory isn't what it was  The regulation still exists in law that street lighting can be up to 200 yards (183m) apart to signify a 30mph zone, although there is also dispensation for other fixed light sources that may be in place of traditional street lights. The HC, however, has dropped the distance requirement and simply says "The presence of street lights generally means that there is a 30 mph (48 km/h) speed limit unless otherwise specified."

& that can be Different in Scotland and is in some Villages.

ie

Street lighting at one side of a road and only residential housing or industrial may mean no speed limit other than National limit for the vehicle you are driving.

There are many Villages here with 40mph before entering the 30mph limit,

and no street lighting at set distances. then after the 30mph, a distance of 40mph before back into National Speed Limit.

So still look for Start of Variation of LImit, 30, 40 50 etc, repeaters & the the sign for National Speed Limit applies.

Street lighting might mean nothing or be important to matters.

It shouldn't be as the Traffic Signs Manual (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/traffic-signs-manual ) is used by authorities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland so it's possible that if you see something that doesn't conform to it, it's not a legally enforcable limit.

For clarification, there will always be a "gateway" sign showing the start of the new limit and this needs to be present on both sides of the road. Repeater signs will be present throughout the limit unless it is a 30mph zone and street lighting is present (not more than 200 yards apart) or it's an NSL without street lighting. 30mph repeaters are not permitted where there is street lighting with gaps of less than 200 yards.

Chris

Shoudn't might be the case, but once i can i will post the type of variation you will find in some Angus Villages and changes happening.

Not to signs but where signs are and when they are there.

As i drive around the UK, i just observe adhere to the Traffic signs that are there and you seldom go far wrong..

If the choice is to ignore them at least you know what you were supposed to be doing.

I'm in a similar predicament after going through a trap yesterday on my GSXR.

Was 110% speeding a little bit further down the road, out of view (but definitely in earshot!) of the radar gun, but then slowed down to come into the village. Problem is, I slowed down but not enough I think before entering the 30 signs. Saw the hi-vis and slammed on, probably around 80-90m from him in a clear straight line although the road does climb towards where he was so who knows what'll happen. 2nd officer there walked out to the edge of the pavement with his big pad/ticket holder thingy and seemed to pay a bit of attention to me and my bike but wasn't hankering to try and get my reg?

I always thought they had to stop you there and then for a radar gun offence but it would appear not so. If you don't hear anything after the magical 2 weeks then you'll be fine. Issue for me is that I only bought the bike on Sunday, so I don't know what the rules are if the ticket goes to the previous owner first then he fills out my details?!

I had similar in my vrs on bank holiday Monday albeit with a camera van - 60 zone into a 30 zone and I was doing a bit more as I was off the gas instead of braking for the 30 sign. Slammed on the brakes but may be too late :(

Both me and the Mrs got caught in convoy doing 37 in a 30 by one of the guns in van

didn't get the notification until 2 weeks later. But about 18years ago I got zapped by Police in a

marked Police car coming over the Bow flyover (30mph) doing 40 odd and they stopped me there

and then I guess it just depends.

I got done on the A249 in Kent by a police motorcyclist with a radar gun. It was in a 50mph limit and I went past him doing 55mph. I got a fine in the post a few days later. When I say I went past at 55mph I really mean that I had slowed down to 55mph.....it was too late by that point though. But yes, you can get done but not without evidence. My fine had a photo of me in my car attached to the fine.

Any of you guys get offered the training day instead of points and fine?

Me and Mrs G got training day when it was both of us.

Training days didn't exist the time before at Bow flyover so points and fine that time.

Licence still clean...

There are no street lights in Scotland! They have carriageway lighting, and if it is not more that 185 metres apart then the road is a restricted road with a 30 mph limit (when the Scots went metric they rounded the distance up, in England & Wales it's a straight conversion).

? They call them Street Lighting when replacing Lamp Posts , which they are often doing,

I read the Costs and notices and watch them, they even have Street Lighting Hotlines for reporting them when out.

Might be true in Scotland where its the case re 30 mph limits, obviously there are exceptions to the rule.

See 'Rural Villages'

& Highland Council Street Lighting Policy.

If there are Speed Restrictions they will be Sign posted.

You just need to spot them sometimes with Overgrown Trees or Bushes, which the Roads Department or anyone else seems not to bother trimming to make the Speed Signs Obvious,

& because sometime they are not near Street or Carraigway lighting,

and also they my not be near the Obvious Start to an actual Village or Houses

I would imagine there are exceptions to be found in England and Wales as well.

Hairy balls just got a letter in the post! 37 in a 30 zone... Doh! :(

No option of awareness course Adam?

Not yet - they gave 3 options, fine and points, course and court.

Have to send back form stating who was driving etc first. Guess I will get an option (or 3 hopefully) in a few weeks and i'll opt for the course. Still dead annoyed :(

Bad luck chap.
