1.6 or 1.6 Greenline? (Superb Estate)

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy a Skoda Estate, used but newish and the Greenline II has become my favourite choice after much research and for my needs. I'm not worried about it not being 140bph/170bhp -- I'm not a racer and most of the time it would be particularly laden -- just need the big boot occasionally, andn I like the economy and greeness of the Greenline II. I have a my eyes on a 61 plate Greenline SE at ~£17k ~11k miles but I've also just been offered a regular 1.6 62 plate SE for the same price at ~12k miles. So the choice is one year newer regular 1.6 or Greenline and a year older. My instinct says that if you are going to take the hit performance hit of of the 1.6, then go the whole hog and get a Greenline -- unless there's a bigger price/year difference than this. My other half says go for the newer car.

Any comments before I flip a coin?

thanks.

I use a 62 plate 1.6 TDI as a taxi and my highest MPG is 60.4 but one of the other drivers has a green line on a 61 plate and his has achieved 71.3 both are the hatchbacks.

When I was searching, I really wanted the estate because it looked better. The Hatchback holds nearly as much stuff as the boot really is massive.

I was looking at used at the time too but the 1.6 Greenline II had only been out a year and the used prices for the Hatchback was the same as for a brand new car, once you had taken into account the VAT off deal. Based on the prices you are quoting above, that is still the case so you need to ask yourself, would you prefer a 2 year old used Estate or a brand new Hatchback?

I believe both the 1.6 and the Greenline II have the same engine and gearbox but with the extra aerodynamics and start-stop the Greenline II is more efficient and I myself love the fact its £30 road tax.

Both are estates, both SEs (each has one non standard option Kessi or spare wheel), and I definitely want the estate (easier to load with a dodgy back). Vat off deal doesn't seem to apply to greenline despite what it says at http://www.skoda.co.uk/finance/finance-offers/no-vat (two dealers have confirmed this to me). I reckon the greenline would be at least £270 cheaper to run per year, including that lovely £30 VED (depending on actual mileage and actual mpg obtained). So the choice is between a 16 month old greenline or the 62 plate (don't know registration date but with 12k on the clock probably on the older side, so say 7 month old).

Estates are much more practicable imo.

Doesn't sound like much between them.

i heard a few people talking about the suspension that is lowered a little bit on the greenline had a fault, this threw me off getting a s spec greenline hatch when ordering in December, plus i didn't really have the money to get one and i was on the lines of getting a 7-12 month old 1.6 tdi se spec hatch octavia, but i decided to get a new superb as the room inside is excellent for taxiing

I've got a 140 DSG estate L & K, did 200+ miles in a greenline saloon (courtesy car) drove to get there not save fuel (average around 50+mph including a lot of a roads). The computer on the car showed 55mpg! I know it may be optimistic & I didn't brim it. It never seemed underpowered - only two of us & was a good drive

Ive had my Se Greenline for 7 months next week and I've loved every minute of it. Just approached 10700 miles. My average mpg over this time is 58mpg. My commute is 65 miles a day. Approx 40% motorway, 40% country lanes and 20% town. Not once have I found it under powered. I think its a cracking engine for its size. Bear in mind I came from an Octy Vrs. The fact that the road tax is £30 was another great point. Rather than dreading when it's retaxing time, its now less than a night out on the town.

With regards to the difference between the SE and SE Greenline. Running costs would be the biggest difference. However the Greenline does look better with it lower ride and boot spoiler and smalker tyres mean lower prices. However this is just my opinion and each to their own. Whatever you decide you will have a cracking car.

Thanks to all for your inputs. I went ahead with the Greenline over the w/e. Driven a couple of hundred miles or so far. Very pleased. It certainly seems nippy enough for me and very nice to drive.
