Recommendations on which VCDS to purchase?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm thinking of investing in a VCDS program so I can "play" around with some other features of my Octy, and wondered if anyone could suggest a reliable version and where to purchase it.

thanks

Malcolm

Gendan are fine they are one of the official dealers, don't waste your time and money on a cheap knock off cable.

I got the Micro-CAN from Gendan, so I can only "play" with the newer cars (MKII Octy onwards). Not an issue for me as the Felly really didn't have any options to fiddle with anyway ;)

Full list of official UK distributors here http://www.ross-tech.com/distributors.html So take your pick.

I have a full HEX+CAN, but as said you can get away with a Micro-CAN if you only ever plan to use it on your Octavia.

I wouldn't bother with any pirate cable/software combos. You'll get a lot of your money back on a genuine cable if you Ebay it in future, and you know for sure it will work and not destroy your ECU or something.

I got a HEX CAN from gendan. Have an octy so could've just got a micro but thought for the little bit extra it was worth it for potential future use

I thought the same with the cable. I would kick my self to not have spent a little extra now so that I can use it on everything.

HEX-CAN-USB thing is the "does it all" option which really is worth doing.

You'll have it one day and find that someone you know needs help with another type, and you can't help. :( Is there really a great deal of difference in the cost?

about £45 difference but hopefully worth it and NHN suggested that it would be easy to make up the difference in beer tokens by helping others!

I have an engine managment light on since removing the EGR valve and was thinking about purchacing a VCDS cable/bluetooth and android app. What is the difference between this one and the expensive ones £100+? What are you getting for your money when shelling out on an expensive one as this one says it reads and deletes codes. Do the cheap ones only display a small number of the common codes?

Thanks,

That is just a generic fault code reader and clearance and it cannot do even half of what can be achieved with the full VCDS. It will only communicate with the main ECU, and cannot clear other faults from the likes of the Airbag ECU etc.

VCDS allows you to clear faults from all the car systems, but not only that. You can also customise the car altering various parameters that would otherwise need a dealer visit.
