Tyre advice and Run Flat Tyres -

Featured Replies

Hi my car had a flat today and the nice gent's at kwik fit (has to go there company car) replaced my tyre with a run flat same make bridgetone but different model to one on the the other corners. I now have a new Potenza on one rear and 3 turanza on the other corners. Will this cause any issues, also on the bridgestone website it advices tyre preasure monitors for run flat's i don't have thease fitted will this cause a problem.

Thanks

If your other tyres are not runflats, I imagine it will affect handling as the construction is going to be different. I personally wouldn't accept that on my car and would demand they changed it as it could be unsafe.

"limp flat" tyres have stiffer sidewalls (and quite possibly tread belts) than normal tyres. A so-called professional who fitted a run-flat on one side with a normal tyre on the other should be taken out and shot, to protect the general public!

Ca' canny until you can get it replaced.

I have a Turanza ER300 on 3 corners and a Potenza S001 on the other one, they are all run flat but do i need the tyre pressure monitor? As i have run flats?

Sorry for any confusion.

Do you have a tyre pressure monitoring system fitted? If not then the fitment of a run flat is illegal.

No Light came on the dashboard

looked in the manual and there is no button near climate control buttons for tyre pressure monitor,

Then you shouldn't be running runflats at all, as a TPMS is required for their use.

Just also noticed they have different speed ratings one corner is a 91W other is a 91Y

Fecking kwik fit there description was wrong they put run flat on order form - job sheet but then don't fit a run flat tyre.

Sorry for all the confusion,

Thanks for the help

Got to love Kwik fit!

Id be getting back there asap.

to start with you shouldnt be running different tyres on the same axel.

Second, you should have a TPMS. The pre-fl vrs has it as standard so a fl should do, it takes time for it to realise the tyres have been changed though. The button is simply "set"

Agree you must have tyre pressure monitor otherwise you'll never know when there flat as the sidewalls are so stiff. Why would you choose run flats on a vrs anyway?....makes the ride a lot stiffer and if you get a puncture your can't repair them like a conventional tyre (manufacturers advice before everyone says you can) and there a lot more expensive.

Run-flats are horrible. I had them on my BMW and if I had kept it long enough to need to change the tyres they would have been swapped for standard tyres - much cheaper and better grip/handling and feedback.

They were only really introduced for large executive cars on the German autobahns as the risk of a rapid deflation on a run-flat is reduced due to their construction - hence them only being fitted on BMW/Merc etc.

Don't you need specific rims to run runflats, to lock them to the wheel etc?

SWMBO has them on her beemer and they're ok but she doesn't have sports suspension. I think she'll **** a brick when it comes time for a new set, she was warned.

Run-flats are fine on normal rims, they are basically a normal tyre with an extremely stiff sidewall to enable them to be driven on when deflated. The only 'special' rims that I can remember were those fitted on Montego's etc in the '80s but they also had strange size tyres as well.
